Since I got a copy of "The Bowie Knife: Unsheathing an American Legend" I have wanted to try my hand at recreating some of the knives shown within. This is the knife that I chose for my first:

After some of Chuck Ward's magic, this is what I came up with:

The original had fittings of N/S but since it isn't available in the thickness that I needed, I used 416 for my fittings and some fossil walrus for the handle. (10" blade & 14 1/2" OAL)

Let me know what you think.

That's very nice Gary! It looks very much like the original and I really how Chuck made it look like it is "floating" above the old photograph.

You did a great job with that, Gary. Such a lovely old-timey look to that piece.

The knife looks exceptionally well designed and built.

Whatever that is that looks like a crack on the bottom of the ivory would absolutely kill the deal for me.

Best Regards,

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the kind words.

Steven--That is a crack in the fossil walrus. I have always looked at flaws like that as character in the old ivory and personally have no problem with them as long as they are filled with cyano. I can understand your point of view as well though.

Gary,

Congratulations on keeping the traditions alive. That's a really good looking re-creation of a classic.

A big thumbs up from me Gary. Excellent work. That book really gets you to thinking doesn't it? I think you nailed that one. Love Chuck's photo.

That is beautiful.
Gotta love the classics and since it is a classic the imperfection in the ivory is fine.

Amazing that you picked that particular piece.
I have a Bruce Evans knife based on the same photo.

Great minds :D

Man I'd say that is spot on, and beautiful. Great work. You doing more? can we look forward to a whole series of these posts? :)

I'm not going to do a series but I had enough fun doing this one that I will do another.

Glad that you liked it.
