I did some batoning today of 2 inch hardwood pieces with my OHT in locked position. It cause some damage to the locking liner resulting in a stiffer opening/closing.

This may be a record. This post has been up for over an hour and a half and no one has said, "use the right tool for the job"! Well I certainly won't, since frankly I am sick to death of hearing that refrain. I will say that its nice to know that it held up as well as it did

The only folder I would baton with is a carbon steel opinel... unlocked.

That simply was a bad idea dude :(

You have to baton differently with a folder than you do a fixed blade, if you hit behind the material than you are only putting pressure on the stop pin and not the lock. Instead of the wood being in the middle, you should be hitting the middle with the baton. I still don't condone batoning with a folder, but this technique can help minimize damage.

i had a length of 2x4 that needed to be shortened and i didn't have a saw so i hammered my griptillian through it. i was careful to not stress the lock or handle and worked it through. other than some very minor denting on the spine there was no damage. my friend who watched just said "wow!". 440c, by the way.

that sucks.

i'll be blunt here though:

small SAK pocket knife = slicing/ cutting duties (ie fuzzsticks, food prep, skinning, shelter building etc)

axe, splitting axe or maul and steel wedge = wood splitting.

wrong tool for the job my friend. ;)
