Decided to leave my Booshway at home and give my Mark Wohlwend Bushcrafter a little woods time today. While I was out thought I'd use it to make a one handed ferro-rod fire.
If you did damage one hand and had to rely on ya ferro-rod this is one way to get around the problem !

Took me a little while to get a good enough spark because the spine is fairly smooth. This situation would be the only time I'd use the spine of my knife with my Ferro-rod, if you do use the spine I'm sure Mark would leave it sharper if requested.Maybe this task should be part of the Bushcraft Knife Challenge !!!

I also had with me my little BHK Necessary Necker, took a pic of it next to my Wohlwend Bushy :

Decided to try that at a little firemaking as well:

Snicker was telling me it was time to go and besides I needed to get back cos I was missing my Booshway !!!!

Nice, definitely a skill I should try practicing. I figure in a real survival situation, if the spine of my knife wouldn't throw sparks, I wouldn't have any second thoughts about using the blade, but it's not something I'd do if I didn't need to.

Really interesting feathers too, perhaps the red/orange colour is just blood from the kill? Or maybe someones exotic pet bird got loose and couldn't tough it in the bush.

Success! Just went outside and tried this method, and got a flame without too much difficulty. Used my Landi MPS and fatwood. I had to smack the butt of the knife with a batton to get it to stick in enough that it wouldn't move when striking the firesteel, first time I've ever needed to do that.

Thanks for the post Pit, glad I gave this a shot.

With my recent broke hand, I have to ask, Are you a righty or a lefty? If so, how difficult would it be to use your weak hand. I broke my right hand, so my "stupid" hand had to take over. I got somewhat proficient, but not that good. I have come to realize that if your primary hand becomes damaged, you must allow ALOT more time to perform the most mundane of tasks. I thought that "stupid" hand would just get some OTJ training, and be ready to go. "stupid" hand is still very stuipid when it comes to doing things. Oh, I must mention, I am ambidextrious, but even with 6 weeks of practice, "stupid" hand barely has a 5th grade education. Great post, great vid, and a most awesome skill, thanks Pit. Moose

Well done bro, I'm glad to see I'm not the only nut here who practices this stuff :)

In times such as that if using a spine that won't throw sparks...coated blades or rounded spines...what have you...the edge will still throw sparks. You just have to weigh out which is more important at the time, starting the fire or maintaining the edge of the knife.

Usually I make a point of practicing this with my left hand because I am right-hand-dominant. I am ambidextrous in many things but not all. I figure if I do most of my practice with my weak hand then doing it with my strong hand shouldn't be too hard, most of the same lessons will apply anyway.

great stuff Pit.. those are some nice looking knives.. they make a perfect combo...:)

Good stuff 'Ol Bud  I really want a Fox Terrier for the twins first dog(I want one for myself 2 :D)
