On the way back from my hike shown in the other post I called at another spot to test out the PA knife a little.

I battoned off a little Fatwood....

I then stuck the blade in a log to use the one handed technique of fire-making. With the blade in the log you can draw the fatwood against the blade to make a fuzz stick.....

As I tried to strike the ferro rod against the spine of the knife the knife started to move around. The log I'd chosen was extremely hard so I could not get the blade in far enough to be stable.I moved over to another softer log and tried again...

Success but as I tried to get a pic the flames lapped up toward the handle and nearly caused the pass around to be terminated early...Sorry John !!!

Anyway with the knife saved I made my way back and as I passed the Inlet I spotted this otter, my camera is only basic so this was the best pic I could get !:o

Back home I tried making a Fuzz stick, wish I had a sharpening stone as that is what you really need to correctly sharpen Scandi edges.:(

I took this pic of the knife next to my old faithful JK Hiker, it gives you a good idea of the size eh !

I didn't realize that the Scandi was that size until that last pic. I thought it was a 4" blade. What do you sharpen with pitdog? You can use sharpmaker rods to sharpen with or glue down some sandpaper to something flat(thats more for stropping).

I have a small diamond hone but usually manage fine just using some wet and dry for my convexed edges.I am struggling to get this how I like it though !:(

Ps. I think the blade is 3 1/2", seems a really good size !

The knife looks small because that`s not a standard Hiker, it`s a Hiker Plus.

Great stuff, pit - but where's the snow? ;)

I will definitely have to add one-handed fire starting to the test regimen when this knife comes my way. I also have a set of Japanese water stones that are just waiting to take a crack at sharpening this blade.

All the best,

- Mike

You may be having trouble with the micro bevel, i can't sharpen mine like a Scandi.
