After posting the one handed fire using my folder I figured I should do one with a fixed blade to compare the two.
I chose to use my JK TTSK, I really like the size of this knife and the fact that it sharpens up really easy.

I gathered Fatwood from the same stump I used in my folder post. Although only 1/8" stock the width of the blade gives the TTSK great lateral strength making prying a piece of cake.

On the way to my test spot I came across some resin which I took as a secondary tinder source.

Snicker watched as I did my fixed blade test.

You will see in this video something I do differently to the folder one. I make a fuzz stick rather than just making shavings, doing this helps keep your tinder in one place in the event you knock it or the wind blows it.

Final thoughts~
I'd always choose a fixed blade over a folder but in this test the folder performed pretty good and if I'd used the fuzz stick technique I think the time taken to get fire would have been very close between the two.
Give this a try with your knives and let me know what you think !
