Well this weekend was literally a blast !
My Brothers wife , dad's cousin ( no joke lol ) has a hefty spot of cattle acreage in the coastal foothills about 3 hours drive from here , a few times a year they throw a party of sorts that is male bonding heaven - guns , beer , BBQ , game and targets aplenty , the only thing missing is a few 19 year old strippers lol. :D
After going to bed early on Friday night at 10 pm (something unheard of for me) we were awoken at 4 am(something unheard of for me) to go "pig hunting" , wild boar that is , so after dressing we hopped in the pickups with our weapons of choice and ranch dogs and headed out , just the drive was exciting , rolling hills , overcast and very cool temps made for a eye opening AM. We split up then drove around till about 6 am but to everyones disappointment , no hogs or coyotes to kill... No big deal though , we headed over to their improvised cabin for some breakfast/early lunch and RnR (beer) , after much conversation and baudy laughter we started some target practice at various metalwood targets around the cabin , set at different ranges etc.. That was great fun , we had everything from 22's to 7 mm mag, 9mm to 45. A hour or so of that then they broke out wild hog sausage , beef ribs , tortillas and salsa.. Oh man.. If you love sausage you gotta try wild boar , it was insanely good. :) Well a bit after that I got my Saiga AK and my Win 30/30 and not to brag and to my suprise seeing as how I was pretty rusty , I did as good as they did with no scope and freehand while most of them used a 'rest' to shoot from , anyway after 100 or so rounds thru my AK , the next round decides to blow up !
The top of the rifle exploded with a loud bang!
I stood there wondering if I was still alive (I could hear everyone in the background saying choice words like "Oh crap" <-- insert exlpletive hehe).
My AK was toast , several parts were laying on the ground around me , as well as the shell casing culprit that was ripped in the middle , dont know if it was a really hot load or what..Anyway I still had both eyes , hands , and my head intact so I have that to be thankful for lol.
Next came the squirrel roundup , we hopped in the back of a flatbed and used 12 guage's on approx 30 or so of the hundreds of thousands of squirrels that live in the area , pretty good fun and a boon to the host since those buggers dig holes that can break the legs of his cattle (his livelihood), we also got a few cottontails and a wayward rattler. :p Certainly anyone from PETA would have had a tremendous cow ! lol no pun intended.. :D .
After that we shot a few more targets then headed on back to the ranch house for bbq'd burgers , we were supposed to crash for a few hours then go try to get a pig again around 2am , but my Brother got sick from the heat so we called it a day.
Now I have a few guns to clean and one gun to scrap and one heckofa weekend story I wanted to share with you folks.
Enjoy your week , Todd.

This seemed like the correct section to post , if not my apolgogy in advance Mods. :)

My head hurts just thinking about it! Glad to hear you picked up where the AK left off ... Sounds like you had a great weekend anyway.

(Oh, yeah. We put guns in Gadgets & Gear. No big deal ... I'll move it there.)

ChiCom AK's are notorious for blowing up during rapid fire.
I'm sorry to see Russian guns go the same route...

Look into the Romanian ones if you need a replacement. Very well made stuff.

Well I will try to take a few pics , problem is seems like my camera only wants to take blurry pics , I'll try though ,see what happens.
Thanks for the pat on the back hehe. Now what am I gonna do with all this 7.62.... :D

::decides NOT to show this thread to his wife...::

I looked long and hard at picking up an AK this weekend at a gun show. I've never purchased a gun/rifle/pistol and have decided that I want to start with something cool. And these were dripping cool all over the floor!:D

Were ya wearing safety glasses? (glad to hear you're okay)

I am glad you weren't hurt. I am sorry to hear that about your AK.

I guess I have been lucky, my Maadis have never given me any problems.

What kind of ammo were you using,we had two Glocks kaboom with Wolf ammo in the past 3 yrs and a Beretta 92 in 40 that had a cracked casing and got lodged in the barrel and luckily it did not explode,a testament to the quality of the Beretta I guess. Wolf ammo should be outlawed yet its imported by the tons!

Glad you're okay, Todd.

The rest of the weekend sounds like it was a slice of heaven. :)

Good to hear that you're ok. Exploding receivers have been known to cause very serious injuries. It can happen from an improper heat treatement or using the wrong ammo.

Sounds like great fun though.

Thanks guys ! yea it was a little slice o' Heaven . I wouldnt mind having a "backyard" that I can go shooting in anytime I want , and imagine that in California even !
Tonight I will try my hand at taking some pics to post , havent had time last few nights.
Yeap ! it was Wolf ammo  which sucks because Wolf makes up about half of my 7.62 stock , so now do I get rid of it or keep it and hope for the best .hmmmm...

Glad your OK.Sounds like you had a pretty good time though.Lot's of years ago a friend who "borrowed" his dad's single shot, shotgun which hadn't been fired in years. We were kids and flipped a coin to see who would shoot first. He won and shot,Mud dauber wasps had built a nest in barrel,no one was hurt, luckily. At least till he had to explain it to his dad.

A few years ago my brother and cousins found a dusty old loaded S&W 38 in an broken dresser drawer. They had no idea how long it had been there, so they left it. I think its still there.

Glad you made it without any injuries, and I'm sorry to hear about your rifle.

Lots of probables. Fatigue from wear,Hot charge, rupture firing partially chambered, accelerated firing cycle.....

Receivers have much more tolerance in foreign mil-surps. Some US guns ate too precisely machined to accept some foreign ammo that is being dumped here.
Guesses on my part.

Great that you survived the blast.

Uncle Alan
