One knife a collector must own?

I have googled this question many times over the years. Trying to, I guess find out what the most collectable knives are. In this thread, it's more a question to see, what is your must have knife as a collector. Looking forward to seeing some interesting answers. Especially from the big dog collectors

For me, the knife that has risen above all others is the Southern Grind Spider Monkey. Next would be the Spyderco PM2.

The one knife every collector must own is the one he or she likes the most.

Collect whatever you want!

For a collector, the knife they "must own" is the one they're currently buying :)

I honestly believe that for better or for worse, regardless of anyone's opinion, the Chris Reeve Knives Sebenza will always be the yardstick to which all folding knives can/should be compared to. I also believe that few people actually grasp the totality of what they are looking at. Haha.

USMC Ka-Bar. Tradition, history, it's actually useful and the price it right.

Then again, if you're not into military history, a Marine or appreciate classic knives, YMMV. The question is pretty broad.

A quality chef's knife. Folders, fighters, choppers, skinners and hunters are all great, but set aside a bit of cash for something that will feed you.

Great thread so far. By one knife a collector must own, as people are posting, I mean the one knife that you personally have to have in your collection, or a knife a collection should have, regardless of price. my one is a Benchmade 42 Balisong. The handles cut from a block of solid titanium, not the new ones.

And I own a mammoth tooth, one of a kind, Bob Terzuola worth about 4k. The C22 and C22BLP Blue Almite are amazing.

Ditto on the Southern Grind Spider Monkey.

I have Brous, Benchmade, ZT, Daboia, Sukhoi, William Henrys, GEC, etc. and a bunch of customs.

The Spider Monkey simply captured me, in every way, when I first held it in my hands!

I think all serious collectors need to own the following at some point during their lives.

1. Chris Reeve Sebenza- As others have said this knife is the measure many use to other knives. It is so widely talked about that you will not have an understanding of half the conversations on this forum without ever owning one. Plus they really are incredible knives.

2. A custom Folder- This list could be very long and there are plenty of them out there to mention but I think every collector should have one folder that is exclusive to them, made for them, that says something about who they are/ something from their life.

4. A custom fixed blade- For the same reason as a custom folder.

5. A higher end true user folder- This is the knife you do not buy to collect dust or put in a safe, but the knife you truly carry everyday and have no qualms using it. In this category the type of knife can be anything from a Spyderco to a Benchmade to a ZT to a Hinderer. It could even be the Sebenza you buy so it could combine with #1.

6. A higher end true user fixed blade- For the same reasons as the folder. Sure this could be a production knife but it would be a lot more fun with a custom fixed.

This is just my opinion as I am not the best collector. Everything I own gets beaten on. Some much worse than others!

Although they're not "all that" to me, I must say a CRK Sebenza. They are a knife worth owning. I have had several. The reason I know they aren't "the one" for me is because I've had them to know. I would never put them down, they are fantastic knives. They check all the boxes as far as fit and finish goes. They are buttery smooth, very clean. The one knife that most folks use as a yardstick against which other knives get measured.

This is a question that is difficult to answer objectively...and even the posted explanation creates conflict. The one knife that HAS to be in my collection is not necessarily one that I would say every knife collector should own. I've got knives that I value much more than their monetary worth - but I don't know that I consider them must haves for myself, let alone anybody else.
As much as I like my various folders - modern and traditional - my obsession is fixed blades...so I would likely dismiss folders from this game (even the ones I ones that have "permanent" status). That's sort of a cop out, I know; but I've tried to identify a folder that I feel that way about, and I don't think I can. Going back to fixed blades, though - I'm a big fan of the RMD - I've got a small pile of them, with a couple more already ordered. I have 2 Randall knives - received about 15 yrs ago. My desk has stands which hold 2 custom handled MBBs - an M4, and an M10 (cleaver style). I've got one offs, and favorite users...but the must have, for me, would probably be the Gerber Mark 1. I had a standard and a presentation grade for many years; and I thought I left them behind, or otherwise lost them, in a move. I ended up obsessing on them until I'd replaced them both. (I later recovered the first 2; so now I have 4...5, if the 35th Anniversary edition counts.)
