If you could only have one knife in a survival situation, what knife would you choose to do it all? Would it be fixed blade or folder? WHY?:

I'm trying to survive, not conquer:

Fixed. Less to go wrong.
* 4"-5" blade length. small enough to do fine work. Big enough to do larger things.
* 1095 carbon steel or similar. Holds an edge well and resharpens easier in the field. Tougher than any stainless that holds an edge as well.
* Blade shape that lets me get my thumb out over the blade for better control of fine cutting operations.

The Ontario TAK 1 would work. But there are others.

Personally I would take 18inch machete that would take a razors edge. This way I could chop, dig, scrape ,cut and do all the nessary things that survival calls for.

If only one...Victorinox large multi tool with the following large lock blade, small lock blade, saw, large screwdriver/can opener, file, and an awl. Locksmith is one model. With these tools I could create other tools and weapons to survive. Good question and a tough one to answer. Normally I carry my locksmith with either project 1 PE or sable 1.

No way in hell would I ever take a folder as my "one and only" survival knife if I actually had a choice. I would go with a fixed blade every time, given the choice. Lots of possible blade choices to go with, from Fällkniven F1 to a traditional style puukko. It would have to have a blade length of at least 3", a comfortable handle, and a decent steel and construction solid enough to handle some harder use.

It's been asked a thousand times, but I've never seen the follow-through: if you finally select one knife for the above scenario, will you then obtain one and carry it with you all the time, everywhere you go? If not, then why ask? If so, then let us know which one you got! :D

BRKT Bravo-1.

Or

Fallkniven A1.

Among others.

Good point Speed01!!! I probally wouldnt want to be carrying a machete on me all the time, that probaly isnt feasible. I'd probaly stow the machete in my truck. Id probally take the fallkniven S1 with me.

Right--this may be stating the obvious, but assuming that you don't want to be in a situation requiring you to "survive," that means you haven't planned it, which means you only have with you what you normally have with you.

That's why I wondered what all these folks who ask these questions end up doing. Presumably, there are handfuls of people walking around right now with the perfect knife, the perfect flashlight, the perfect gun...if they aren't, then they won't have those things with them when they find themselves in a "survival" situation.

My choice would be a properly profiled 18 inch machete. Such a tool has numerous uses and is a great weapon as well. BuddyLee has the right idea here. Few people know how great a tool the machete is as a survival blade.

My first thought would be my Bravo-1, but Superduty Truck has a good point. I might choose my Victorinox SAK or SOG S62

If I had time to make a choice then I would definately go with a fixed blade knife. Something in the 5" to 6" blade length with a full tang for strength. A simple drop point with flat grind. Maybe something like the Caldwell 1-6, or something from Ranger Knives.

If I was placed into a survival situation with what I had on me then it would be a large tactical type folder and a medium sized slipjoint, because that is what I carry day in and day out.

I see this kind of response a lot. But it begs the question: "How are you getting into a survival situation with nothing but your EDC?"

Here another questions for you guys....The one blade that I carry (sere2000)around as my edc...How do i know this will be enough to get me through a potential survival situation? Do I test the blade to destruction like Ed fowler does? Or do I carry somthing else, maybe somthing im less comfortable with?

This is a good point. How do we end up in these places? Everyone can imagine a camping trip gone bad (upturned canoe, everything lost), but still the question is valid. HOW are we ending up in these situations with nothing but our "dream" tool with us?

I can;t imagine not having all kinds of everyday stuff with me, not to mention specific survival items (because, again, HOW do we end up in these situations?).

My cheap Schrade folder will work just fine in a pinch. After all, it will be in my pocket at all times and I know how to use it ;) That said, if I'm heading out into the wilderness for some camping a fixed blade of around 4" is my preference. Most survival use is really going to be small items like making snares and fixing dinner ;)
