Thanks for all your help so far. I have found a company that actually carries the Ontario 497 Mark III mod 0 (If anyone is interested Brigade www.actiongear.com has them). I have ordered a couple of them. And now I am trying to find out, with historical accuracy, what was issued with the knife itself in 1972 or around there.)

Just to let you know, so far I have contacted Brigade and they couldn't tell me for sure. I have contacted the US navy public affairs office and they were not too sure what was issued with the knife. I have also gone through google yet again and done an exaustive search for ontario knives and their "history" in the US Navy and have pulled up very limited information. Most of the things I am finding say things like it came with a sheath and don't really give any substantial information.

Anyone out there in that was in the navy remember this knife and what they got with it?

1972 is too early. The Mk-III wasn't issued till around the mid-1980's. The Navy was basically looking for an American version of the AK-47 wirecutter bayonet. The prototype wirecutter version wasn't strong enough so they dropped that part.
Not sure what you mean by what was issued with the knife?
