One Man, One Knife, How long can I last?

This will be a bit of an experiment. A true EDC

I am not a collector, but I will admit that GEC is really pushing that to the limits.

I really like the look of knives/gear as it forms a patina and ages and changes over time.

I just got my No15 Cap lifter in ebony about a week ago and its all i have carried since. I want to try and see how long I can go with no other pocket knives besides this.

I do hike and camp a lot, usually my outdoors knife is a Victorinox farmer (I do a lot of canoe trips and stainless is nice) but that fall is in full effect here in Canada those trips are done.

I will attempt to use this knife from everything indoors to outdoors and everything in between. I will post updates here as time progresses showing patina and wear.

Here are a few pictures showing the knife as new.

Here is a crappy cell pic after 1 week, the etched logo is starting to wear off some (not as bad as this picture makes it look) and some patina is coming in.

I will try and update this thread weekly or so with pictures and progress, wish me luck!

I'm quite interested to see how that patina develops. I'm debating right now whether to force a patina on one of mine or not.

I love it. There have been a couple of similar threads. AZranchman had his Case 6375, and stich has his peanut. I look forward to seeing how your knife develops and how your feelings about it develop. Good luck in your experiment.

I carried the same knife for the best part of ten years.

Wish I could remember which one it was! :D ;)

A man and a knife can last a life time. A knife knut and a knife can last... what, a week? :D

Can you answer the question, "But why?"

I mean, it's kind of like only eating strawberry or vanilla ice cream from now on. Sure, they are great flavors, but there is chocolate, pistachio, moose tracks......

I like topics like this because I always want to see the original poster succeed and even if he/she doesn't, it's still fun to watch the progress. I wish you the best of luck and I'm looking forward to your updates.

I'm particularly interested in how those steel liners and bolsters show their age over time.

Good luck. You can do this!

I like the idea of this kind of challenge but I would only last a few days. We all probably have that one knife that if we could only have one it would be the ______ for us. For me its a Vic Pioneer. But as others have stated its so much fun to switch it up. Just too many excellent knives out there. Good luck mortonm!

I could never succeed at this challenge. I change what knife I carry several times a week sometimes. ;)

I have faith in you. I have faith in you because I can do this, too, if I want. I usually do. The problem I run into is that, when I only carry one knife, then I get this voice in my head that says, "well sell everything else that you're not carrying, because you'd rather have the money." Then I have all this money, and it often wants to be spent on knives.

I think you could live your whole life with that knife, and never miss anything else.
The thing is, most of us like to change things when we have the opportunity to do so.
I've carried the same knife for weeks and months; personally, I know that a small (2-3) knife rotation is what works best for me (it seems to be "my" way - same thing works for watches) but we're all different.

I never understood the point in imposing unnecessary limits on yourself. There are much worse vices than an interest in knives.

I EDC'd a GEC 73 for a couple of years. I had it in my pocket every single day. Not out of some weird resolution, but because I didn't want to carry anything else. It still gets carried more than any other knife I have, but it's more a primary carry now. I supplement it with my other knives as needed or wanted.

I think if you want to limit yourself to one knife you shouldn't be hanging out in a knife forum.

Thank you everyone for the comments and support

For those with instagram feel free to watch along @gec_edc as well

Me too, I know the blade with patina but I'm curious to see how the liners and bolsters change over time

I have only about 10 pocket knives, mostly alox a couple old Camillus and a gec 47 farm and Field. Just feel like this cap lifter combines the best of them all, the sheepsfoot blade is so great for day to day stuff and the cap lifter has 1001 uses

I just want to try and keep to the one, has some hardening back to our fathers and grandfather's who used it for its use sake and not to collect, and to prove to myself the one is all I really need

Victorinox pioneer I carry often as well and will be my biggest challenge as I have a nice old cross red one ive been carrying on and off for the last couple years but I just love the blade patina of carbon steel so here we are

I did this a lot and every time I cut down I managed to keep it smaller than the cycle before. I went from a lot of knives to a lot less. I still have too damn many.

I am just doing this for fun, not some weird form of masochism. Likely for me a 2 to 3 knife rotation is about perfect as well but just something I wanted to give a shot and also some place to post pics of this knife as it ages

I carried my Leatherman for several years non-stop. But of course, that was BEFORE I started hanging out on the porch...
