Well, it's been a month since I started gliding knifes onto rocks .... Those are my initials thoughts on the subject and can be taken with a grain of salt or a train full of doubts. the abbreviations IMHO and YMMV apply to everything that will follow.
1. Angle and pressure control matter much more than the abrasive/method/steel/knife/ying-yang/abracadabra and what not.
2. "sharp" is a term invented by pretentious men holding the first blades while the rest of the world still used stones to whack animals on the head.
3. While I LOVE my 1/3/8K naniwa SS, those are unnecessary for the beginner. The 100/320 combo stone and a piece of cardboard I have on hand can bring me a long way on the sharpening road.
4. It's been only a month and I can say this: I'm addicted.
Oh, one last thing: nothing beats free hand sharpening going edge leading on stones
