Thomas Linton mentioned starting an alternative reality thread where he'd won a large sum of money. I have a thread like that, but kind of the opposite: I'd this credit card on my desk a little while, waiting activation. When I called the number this evening, I was informed I had a 1800.54 balance and another 18000 I could draw upon. I was told thanks for the 2000 I'd sent on the 4th.

Pretty strange reality for a card I never used. I'll have to call tomorow and see If I can't reach a live human to discuss this with.

Maybe the cc company has their wires crossed I haven't heard of any thiefs paying their bills

Master Card? If so, a current big story is that a hacker gained access to 40,000,000 credit card files several months ago.

must be pretty honest theives then,

identity theft is becoming a major problem worldwide. why, even here on this forum our esteemed moderator munk was killed by an identiity theif while on a business trip to texas, the funeral was yesterday & we all with regret looted his gun and knife collection. he would have wanted it that way. yvsa got his m1a1 and is even as i type drawing a bead on the evil doppleganger one.

see http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352252 if you want to help rid the world of this terror.

every thread has it's own reality.

As for the card- No, I doubt this is part of the newest breakin. As noted, thieves generally don't pay 2000.

These darn breakins, though, have been getting worse. I predicted many months ago the entire Industry would be in crisis. Insurance costs are going to rise because of this. And, for the New World Order conspiratorialists, and my Christian wife, think this will bring us one step closer to a national ID and the Mark of the Beast.

Bad trip all the way around.

They get a couple million more fraud cases, I'd think paying the 50 bucks limit would be out of the question- for a theft of the company material I had no responsibility over? This is going to be a catastrophy.

wired.com - I forgot about them. I think that's where I first read of the mandatory GPS chip in all cell phones sold in the US past a certain date a couple years ago. No one believed me- thought I was paranoid. (they were right, of course.) Chip was in place for the roving wiretap the FBI wanted. They got the roving wiretap through the Patriot Act. Roving wiretap is not a bad idea at all. Problem with the chip though, is the abuse potential. How about going hiking in a National Park and find a ticket waiting on the windshield of your car for wandering off the approved path?

In other news- The card thing is fine. Turns out I was calling the number of another card my wife had thrown on my desk. She really did pay 2000 last month.

All I know is that I clicked the link, and wired.com wanted to save about 37 cookies to my computer. Thanks, but not today.

Kind of funny, my credit card company suspected fraud on my account, so they contacted me and asked to cancel the card. "Of course, and thank you." Then they sent out another one via the Post Office and it took about a week to get to me. Put me in a lurch as I only have the one card, and rarely carry cash, so I found myself realizing just how much I use the thing on a daily basis.

At work we had the machine go down for most of a day one time, really killed business. I think if the terrorists were smart, which they kind of are, sometimes, they would go after the internet and our entire computer infrastructure.

Just my $.02. Put it in on my card if you would.

ah, well, if they weren't thinking about it, they are now. if the internet goes down, i'll know who to blame. as i'm sitting in an internet service center where we host part of it, if a bangy thing goes off here i'll send you the bill. you can put it on your card. WWII had a poster - loose lips sink ships:D

It's always possible our 'micro soft' computers and the net are too screwed up to entirely wipe out.

a friend of mine worked as a forensic auditor and investigated identity theft. he eventually quit and never looked back. apparently it was a very depressing job.

it is a crime that basically ruins your life.

i got some thoughts on possible deterents but i'll not mention them in public.

It happened to my wife. There's a security tag on her credit line now. The gal taking care of her dying father stole his narcotic meds and the kids SS #'s, (which never should have been at that home- all the kids had grown and left)

We didn't find out until we went to buy a house. The Phone company in Ca said we owed them a 1000 bucks.

Among other duties, I am responsible for system security for a major Air Force project. You would be surprised at the number of attacks we repel each and every day. Honestly frightening...

When I worked for a credit card authorizer, there were two major auth centers in the US, St. Louis and Lake Success. You'd have to hit both of them to have a major impact on retail sales. Now I hope there are more backup sites.
Generally when a store or chain has problems it is with their own data center, or a "middle man" (like the place I worked for) they use who doesn't have proper emergency planning. With anything critical, you have standby servers ready to take over. Also, credit authorization is done on private networks, so the internet would not affect brick & mortar retail. You could hit any of the high speed hubs in major cities to affect everything though, including phones. There used to be maps of these spots readily available, I bet they are harder to find now.

Computer security is a major problem for all businesses. The biggest issue is how to give your employees access (numbering in the hundreds or thousands) and keep out the bad guys. It is not an easy task.

IMHO, a cyber melt down is inevitable. As is a nuclear explosion. "If it can happen, it will happen given enough time".

So stock up on ammo, khuks and guns for when the Huns are at the gate.

Gawd, I hate being paranoid.

As long as it doesn't hurt anybody and your life & family aren't missing something, I don't see any problem with a li'l paranoia. It's healthy, even. I'm getting an M1 from the CMP, a 1911, and a gun safe full of ammo this year. Thankfully I got the khukuri part covered already. :D

I'm heavily armed but don't have a generator. But I'm surrounded by limestone cliffs- should be fairly safe for radiation. (Unless they get the military base over at Great Falls. 200 miles away or so.
