One more CQC-7 question--smoothness?

My new CQC-7 is sharp now, ;) But the action is not that smooth. Its not gritty or anything but its more like glass on cardboard instead of glass on glass. I know it takes some breaking in, and ive pretty much been working it without lubricant since friday to let the friction smooth all the surfaces. What kind of spacers are in these?

Are Emersons really hard to break in? My delica is really smooth and has always been that way, although it has no liners. I figured for the price this cqc would surpass that smoothness in time.

If they dont just because thats the way they are.... well thats okay too. I really love this knife so far!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

They just arent designed to be all that smooth are they?(still working the blade........)

It depends.

If you're getting grittiness like dirt or rocks feeling, then something's wrong. Send it back. I've seen that before... something's wrong with the pivot.

If you're getting stuttering, you just need to back off the pivot tension.

Emersons are not terribly smooth unless you polish the crap out of the interface. Partly this has to do with the nylatron washers instead of zytel (like in the Delica), which is stiffer and less "slippery". Zytel, teflon, and phosphor bronze will all probably be slipprier than nylatron.

Partly it has to do with what you're buying.

Factory Emersons are not delicate art knives... you pay for the materials, the US manufacture, the design, and the customer service. They aren't exactly smooth to begin with.

So they generally need to be tweaked to function well.

You should try the trick I posted before... slick it up with something like Militec-1, tighten down the pivot, and then work it, maybe 50-100x.

It'll help... it won't get glassy like a Voodoo pivot, or like teflon washers, but they won't stutter, and there won't be any lateral or vertical play (like what I've seen from Spydercos, including Delicas and Natives).

I had one (sold it by now), and had to take it apart to clean up residue caused by the laser cutting. It really pays and it is easy to reassemble. just make sure you drop some wax on the screws first, so the finish :barf: doesn´t come off!!

disassemble it (it doesn't void the warranty), clean out the pivot, lube it with some militec. it should be smooth thereafter. it is possible that some dirt/metal dust got into the pivot during sharpening etc.

my emersons were all smooth but not glassy smooth like my buck mayo. now, that's smooth.

Thanks for the advise! I tried that trick after reading your other post, but I dont think I worked the blade enough, Ill try that one more time. It certainly is smoothing up with use, and its cool that its not supposed to be glassy, Id rather have the tough materials!

Again thanks!
