i just traded for a knife that i've wanted for years. when i first got interested in real knives, one of the first that caught my eye was the kershaw random task.
i saw a few when i visited smkw's years ago, but my limited budget kept me from aquiring one.
soon afterward, they were discontinued.
i did manage to get a left handed ps mini task at the works. they had it on clearance and i got it for @ $43.00. but i still wanted a random task.
well last week, one came up for trade here on the forum. i sent an offer, but was told that i would be kept in mind. the trader wanted to see what else was offered. i patiently waited for a few days, and heard nothing back.
my wife suggested that i send him another email, which i did.
i put up several knives, and offered multiples for his task.
after many emails, and lots of consideration on his part, he agreed to make a trade.
it was a very fair deal, and a most pleasurable experience.
now i have a random task to go along with my mini task. they're both great knives!

thanks to the trader (you know who you are) for my grail knife and making me one happy camper!
thanks for looking.

Very cool. I've yet to own one of my grail knives.

I always liked the look of the random task. I love that blade shape and grind.

Nice man, I've always wanted a plain edge Random Task as well. Is yours one of the 440v versions? Hey can you do me a favor and check to see if the blade has a hole in which the ball detent falls into when the knife is closed. I like everything about the Task series however I'm not a huge fan of assisted opening any more. I'm wondering if I could take out the spring and the detent would hold the blade closed. On the AO Kershaws I have, about half of them can be switched to non AO because of the hole in the blade for the detent.

hey ryan, thanks!
the model i have is the cpm 440v version.
as far as i can tell, looking into the gap with a 10x loupe, there isn't a hole in the blade for the ball. it's just riding on the tang surface.
my mini is the same way, no hole.

a couple questions for anyone that might know.
i always thought the handle material was polished g10, but in doing some recent research, it's listed as polished micarta. does anyone know what it actually is?
and second, i always liked the angled thumbstud that's on my blur, and was wondering if i sent the knives back to kershaw, if they could push out the regular thumbstuds and install the angled ones. they're press fit in, so doing it myself is out of the question.
if i remember correctly, some of the tasks had the angled thumbstuds. but i don't know if these were earlier models or later models.
what do you guys think?
later,
don
