Well, one of the knives that I got this past week was a Manix 2XL. That thing is a beast. I really like this knife a lot. For a $110, you really can't beat this much knife, with so many good things packed into it.

I have a couple of questions, for the guys with a little more insight than I have. This is my first Spydie with the ball bearing lock. How strong is this lock? Is it a lock that would be considered "hard use"? Also, when you open mine, the thumb stub doesn't travel all of the way forward. It only goes about 2/3 of the way. Is that so it can have some "wear in room"?

Thanks for the input guys.

hey bravo,
will give you my opinion on your question. sleep easy. that lock system is one of the best in show. have 3 manix's and nary a problem. much more positive [in my opinion] than a liner-lock. my benchmades with the axis lock are as good. I have noticed that the manix's lock up a little tighter. that space is perfectly normal, so not to worry. when you mentioned "hard use", I hope you didn't mean "hard abuse". use it hard and it won't disappoint. hope this helps. best regards.

The Manix 2 xl is just about the only Spyderco I've never owned that I want to try but it is on my short list. I have my suspicions that it just won't bump my SuperLeaf out of rotation ergo the hesitation.
But I have seen a diagram somewhere of the ball lock and yes, the ball does have room for wear-in and will seat in further as it breaks in.

The lock may take some time to get used to and mine never needed to be broken in.I think the ball lock will pass as hard use, but I consider the knife a large slicer.I think the Manix 2 XL is the best value in the Spyderco lineup for someone who prefers a large knife like myself. A deep carry clip would be an improvement for my particular EDC preferences.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I really want to like this knife, just had a few questions. Yes I agree, salmonkiller, a deep carry clip, would be pretty nice. As it stands, there is a lot of knife that sticks out. I also agree, that this is a great slicer. In spite of it's size, it cuts really good. I'm not looking to abuse this knife, when I say hard use. I am a fireman, and use my knife a lot, hence my concerns with the lock. I also use my knives a lot at my side job, where I cut a lot of boxes. These boxes are triple thick cardboard, about 1/4'' thick. So when I say hard use, I mean that I use my knives for more than just opening mail. Thanks again for all of the replies.
