all of the tools that you mention have merit, i have or had carried all of the above or their equivalents at various times, but i think that the one item that i could make do with ie either a multitool or a ruksack, i have the fireman, with a serrated blade in addition to the ruksack components. i have been pleased with its usefulness. a large chopper would be helpfull, although i can do about everything i need to keep alive with the small knife, i have built and used a workable fireset with just the fireman for instance, i could also do the same with any of the multitools, but i dont think the blades are as good on the multitools as the sak knives. could i build a fire set without anything, i might try that this summer when i get a chance, but a metal tool would speed the work immensly. could i use any of the above tools to accomplish the fire, shelter, food, triad in the wilds, yes i have built the traps, shelters, firesets with the brute, sak, and super leatherman( which i consider equivalent to the wave in this discussion) so far. i havent tried the axe but have a gransfors hunters axe that i will get around to using for basic skills some time.

too many tools, too few hours.

I shiver at the thought of not having at least three of the above tools at hand in a survival situation. However, I can not be without my SAK Rucksak. With it I can get by until I come up with some of the other stuff. The Becker would make shelter building a bit easier, the M6 would make eating somewhat more reliable; however, I can build a shelter with deadfall stuff trimmed with the SAK, clean fish with it (or critters snared), and have all the other tools should they be necessary. The same could be said for the Leatherman, but I don't have as much experience with it.

Keep the polls coming, at least it makes us think...

The Becker, and I would have the SAK hidden in my pocket.:D

I can't go with just one. I usually travel everywhere with at least three.

I just got 12 hoods woods videos on a trade. :D

and Ron has made me rethink so much. I highly recommend them.

he really recommends the rucksack. I am still not sure if I would rather have a multi-tool.

I agree that the blades on multitools are poor to say the least.(especially leatherman) though the swisstool blade is pretty good.

after watching Rons videos you can easily see the versatility of sak's and multi-tools. he makes so many things with that dawn rucksack. it is an awesome sales pitch.

of course we would all hope to sneak a few extras.

I vote for the wave I think the pliers could really add a bit more than the rucksack.

I love my Wave. I think the blades are just fine for what I want to do with a multi-tool. I travel with mine every day. It's a great tool kit for urban travel.

I like the Rucksack for wilderness utility. The saw is awesome and the long locking blade is good along with a can opener to get at a can if you need. The corkscrew holds my tiny screwdriver to work on my glasses if needed. It is very very comfortable in the hand.

Pair it with a good fixed blade and I have a good wilderness system. I also prefer to travel with a 3 to 3.5" folder or neck knife. Please don't make me choose just one.;)

gotta be the Brute! The muti tool items are convieniant but I know i could get by without them. The Brute will chop so no axe. And the rifle won't be good for much beyond signaling and shooting. Besides, what good is it after the bullets are spent?

Well, if you'll allow me my Gerber multi-tool instead of the Leatherman, I'd take that hands down. With the Gerber, I can have exchangeable saw blades, plus all the other tools on the Rucksack, and the pliers and file besides. And while the blade on my Leatherman PSK isn't worth a darn, the Gerber blade is pretty good. Nowhere near as nice as the Rucksack, but still quite usuable. It will take a great edge, seems to hold it alright, and locks in place. And while it's a decent size, the handle design of the Gerber makes the blade a little clumsy. Are you sure I can't have my BM 720 AND my Gerber? I'd feel pretty good with that pair. :~} And maybe my tiny mini-Altoids kit?

If you happen to be huntin' out Table Rock way when I roll thru in the Jimmy, you can always TRADE me that rifle for a lift back to Molalla. ;)

The Leatherman I suppose. Don't have no Rucksack. Do I need one?
