One of the Best Pieces of Gear I've Ever Bought

I recently picked up a mini Nexxtech scale at The Source, and I wish I bought one sooner. It cost me $15 and it's enough of a scale to weigh any single piece of gear I own. I've already been completely stunned at the weight of some of my gear. I'm sure to shave many pounds off with this little guy!

One thing that really struck me -- my Ontario SP8 machete weighs 27.1 oz. ()with its sheath, meanwhile my 18" Roselli Axe weighs 28.5 oz. with its sheath, negligible weight difference for such a huge feeling size difference!

Definitely a worthwhile investment that you may want to check out! :D

I got a scale two years ago. I keep a weight list of all my knives, multi-tools, flashlights, camping gear etc. If I have to carry it, I know what it weighs, and choose accordingly.

After joining Backpacking Light.com a couple of years ago, and being disabled, I started to take an interest in the weight of the gear I carried.

I bought a Salter Aquatronic 1030WHDR scale, which weighs items up to 11lbs and also weighs liquids. Very well made, good, clear readout (in the measurements of your choice) 15 year warranty at about $25 (£/$ equiv.).

Details, here (home page has a US setting).

I will preface this statement by saying I don't do multiple day hikes in which weight becomes a huge concern for me - but I could care less about the amount of weight I carry. I carry the stuff I need and that I think I need and if it feels heavy then I know I'm getting a good workout :)

Most of the time, nowadays, I have my son on my back in the kid carrier so that throws everything out the window when thinking about cutting weight down on packs. Now if I could just get him to stop playing drums on my head..... :)

Yeah, I got a scale last year. Definitely worth it. Every ounce counts, and I could definitely shave a few ounces, even pounds.
I even made a spread sheet of all of my backpacking equipment and what it weighs, so I can easily see what can be left at home, replaced with something lighter, etc.

Get a drum to put on your head. Then he can drum all he wants, and you're shielded! :D

Kids are wild. My daughter used to do the same to me, slap the top of my head as we walked along with me carrying her like that. She was also good at reaching down and clawing at my eyes. :D
