At one of the earliest gatherings, John invited everyone to design their own "tin-knife", defined as a knife that will fit in an altoids tin.
We had about 8 people at that first gathering, and I came up with this design that I called the Scanduckie!
The knife features a small scandinavian grind blade, with a handle that is designed to be a scraper for a fire-stick, and also provide a good thumb-rest for cutting, and then I had John drill holes so that in a pinch, you could lash the Scanduckie to a sapling and gig frogs or spear fish or what have you.
Meet - Scanduckie!!
How many of you have pictures of John GRINDING your knife? Scanduckie is in that exclusive club!
Scanduckie on the bench....
The man and the duckie.
Here Scanduckie is looking back at it's master....
Ready for the JK heat treat to become worthy of the name K-Treet steel!
After initial heat treat, John always lays his blanks on the spine to avoid warping.
Scanduckie on the coals -
Here is Scanduckie with the rest of his brothers after a heat treat and tempering. Now they all sport K-Treet steel!
All cleaned up and ready for the Stump for some beauty shots.
The Scanduckie was my first design, and it has proven to be very useful, even though it is an ugly duckling.
I hope you all enjoy seeing the birth of a Scanduckie!
