Of the three knives below:

Mountaineer II
Sable IV
Mk VI

Which would you choose?

Are the Mountaineer and Mk VI identical apart from the upper guard section? Or, is the grind also a mite higher on the mountaineer?

What's the point profile like on the Sable? Is it fine enough for fine wood carving or would one of the clip points be a better idea?

Does anyone (Piter?) know if the Auriga sheath is available for all?

Thanks for any advice.

Nick

Unfortunately, asking opinions rarely helps in making a decision for a knife. Everyone will have their "own" likes and dislikes of various knifes.

As you said, the Mtn II and Mk VI are very close. I have the Mtn II and love it. It's a great overall, useful knife. The Sable's profile looks like it would be a great slicer. Very handy for various camp duties. Not to say the other 2 would not suffice. My Mtn II is one of the sharpest knives I own.

Whichever you choose I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Chris makes a mighty fine knife. Excellent fit and finish. What I like best about his knives is, they are built like tanks, yet cut like a knife should.

Although I really like most of the knives in the one piece range, my favorite knife remains the first CRK I ever purchased, the Mountaineer II. For some tasks, I like the use of the thumb ramp. (Incidentally, it's for this reason that I also prefer the NR over the GB.) The differentiator for me on Mountaineer vs. Sable is just a personal preference on blade style.

Best of luck in your decisions.

For MK.VI (my favorite 5.5" OPR) almost instantly as I have it in my own collection. For the remaining two... I'll ask around for one ;)

Thanks for the answers guys and thanks for the response Piter. I think it's between the Sable and Mtn now, I don't need the upper guard and it's possible it will get in the way for certain things, I've got a Mtn I arriving today so that should give me some idea of the point style and grind (this one won't be a user though :) )

Than of these two I'd pick Mountaineer I... just more "all-round tool".

I already have that covered :D

So, now I know what the Mtn II point should be like, I think I'll be on the lookout for a Sable IV ;)
