I know I was in here a while back asking around about these, but I never got around to picking one up. I have started camping more and realize I want new fixed blades as the old Ka-Bar just don't do it for me anymore

I have heard enough good reviews that I am going to pick one up as soon as I figure out which one I want.

I am looking in the range of the 4" or 5.5" blades and it will be carried with a Busse Natural Outlaw. I will probably use it for mainly food prep, but it will be a back up fixed blade to the NO as well so it needs to be fairly sturdy. I like the clip point blades and am leaning fairly heavily towards the Mountaineer I or II, again I don't know how well the work in the different lengths.

I am also interested in comments on the sheaths. I like the idea of a leather sheath for around camp and in more populated areas as the look a little nicer, but I would want kydex/concealex if I take it on a backpacking trip. Where is the best place to pick up aftermarket sheaths for them?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions you can hook me up with.

The ShadowIII and MountainerI are 4" blades. The smallest one piece in the CRK range. The ShadowIII has a spearpoint blade that is thicker at the tip than the clip point MtnI. A concealex sheath is more secure the booth leather sheaths IMO. Dennis Wright had some very good comments regarding the Shadow and Mountainer in an earlier post, including a special order that includes blends some traits of the MtnI (lines filed in the back of the blade for added grip). All depends on what size you want to carry.

Any one of the 4" CRKs should do you just fine, along with your N.O. With that said, and seeing as you have your N.O., why don't you take a serious look at the Sable IV. It has a very useful bladeshape which lends itself to most of the things you need to do in camp. It excels at the things the N.O. is too cumbersome for and is not the greatest at the things the N.O. is best at.

Happy Hunting.

tique,
I recently got a NO, and am getting one of Eric Noeldechen's Concealex sheaths for it. I own three of his sheaths, and have nothing but praise for them. He has also made sheaths for CRK FBs, and there is a pic on his site ( http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/ ) of some he made for a P1 and Shadow IV. There are no CRK knives on his list of in-stock knives, so a knife might have to be sent for him to make a sheath for it.
The NO sheaths are in stock, btw.

I now have a Project I incoming, should be here tomorrow or Saturday

(thanks Roy) I'm also trying to pick up a Sebenza as it comes with very high recommendations and I'm quite unhappy with my current array of carry folders. I will continue the hunt for my Mountaineer I shortly, I need to raise some funds though as I only have the cash for the Sebenza or the Mountaineer I since I picked up the Project I in trade.

Owen, let me know how well you like the NO sheath, I have been considering picking up an all concealex sheath for it. I think you can get the CRK concealex sheaths by Eric from Murray @Proedge.

Will do. It should be here any day, now. Eric's also sending me a 2" drop loop (made of Concealex-he doesn't have a webbing supplier, right now). I'll email you a pic or two, if I can get some decent scans.

Let me know how you like that Project 1. I'm especially interested to see how it compares with the Busse.
Let me add another high recommendation for the Sebenza. You won't be sorry! I got a small one, and LOVE it.

I have had the Project 1 for a couple days and am in love with it. I'll have to wait until this semester is over until I get a chance to play with them though. I'm having a hard time deciding between the Project 1 and the NO, both feel great, but I am leaning towards the P1. I can't wait until my Mountaineer 1 gets here, I might just have to carry it a bit around town and see how well it works.

You were right about the Sebbie, just got one and already am in love.

Now I have to decide on whether or not to get kydex for them.
