There hasn't been a thread on this subject for awhile. If you're like me, you have probably changed what you store in your hollow handle a few times and have finally found your perfect set up.

Here's mine for my Mountaineer II:

- 8 REI Mini Flares, I mean, Stormproof Matches :D
- Striking pad
- FireSteel blank (2.5" X .25")
- 2" homemade hacksaw striker
- 1 Spark Lite Fire Tab (mostly just to hold everything in place)
- Sun Company compass in buttcap (same compass Randall uses in their Model 18)

Next?

After some experimentation, I've decided to carry most of what you describe (weather proof matches, steel/flint, etc.) in a kit that's separate from the knife I carry. On occasion I'll store currency (no more than $200) in the handle, but I don't even do that much anymore.

Sometimes I change it up, dumb everything out, screw on a second buttcap with no compass, and go commando. :D

I just pulled the trigger this morning on a new Aviator. I'm wondering what the approximate dimensions of the storage area are? Does anyone have any idea?

I only really use the Mountaineers out of my OPKs. I like to keep things simple so I just stick to secondary fire lighting kits for the most part.

Mtnr. 1:

SAS compass
Fero. rod and slim carbon steel striker.
Tinder, kept sealed in drinking staws.

Mtnr. 2:

SAS compass
Hobo fishing kit.
Fero rod and striker.
Tinder, kept sealed in straws.
Rubber strips for starting fire in the wet.

Not sure of the dimensions, but the 4" blade models have pretty small handles that don't allow for much. Matches, firesteels, and compasses will have to be on the smaller side.

Gosh, there's a lot of empty handles out there. :o

Or a lot of people who don't want to tell us what they keep in there.....................

Just got my Mountaineer II so I'm sort of rounding up the items I want to put in there.

I wish I could say it was a microfilm or something but it will probably be the usual -- matches, flint, etc.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get anything stored in the handle of my Nyala. :D

Just a firesteel wrapped in cotton ball and waxed string. That's it. Nothing more. And it's come in handy a few times even if I am not a survival dude.

My Shadow III handle is still empty, havent gotten around to filling it up yet...but im thinking some matches, cotton balls, maybe a couple of small hooks and some line...nothing extraordinary.

Ive already got a set in my backpack and another on my person, so the set in the handle will be the backup's backup.

I've also considered some sort of a sharpening rod (ceramic, maybe?), but not sure where to find one that size. Any thoughts?

I sometimes take a Lansky crockstick with the rubber bits taken off the ends. That is right about 3.5" long and 6/16th wide. You can get ceramic and diamond ones. I also have some fine ceramic rods from one of those V sharpeners, they are really small (2" and 2/16) but still good for touch ups.

You can also find many small round or triangular stones at heardwear stores, the fine ones are usually OK for field touch ups and the like.:)

I just received my Mountaineer 1, what a knife!! I couldn't decide b/w the M1 or M2, but for backpack purposes, the 1 is just fine. I plan to fill mine with a few matches, small compass, flint and a hook and line if I can fit it in.

Thanks Haze. Some great ideas here!

Good choice on the Mtn. 1. It will be hard to find a nice quality compass that fits in the Mtn. 1 buttcap. This one isn't too expensive and fits perfectly in a Mtn. 2 buttcap, but would also fit nicely in the handle of the Mtn. 1. It's the same compass Randall uses in their Model 18.
