I think the very first maybe pre production version had an oval cap?

Picture of my 4 one piece knives with various caps.

Interested if there are any other variants out there. What you got?

Cool thread idea, I only have one to share (looks like your first one), it's on my S.A. Aviator:

I only have the standard small and large butt caps but I have always had a hankering for a Ti butt cap for one of my OPK users.

i'd love to snag one of the red or in general hexagonal ones. It's really a shame these stopped getting produced.

Cool knife. I love the hex caps!

If you ever get the Ti ones sorted, I'd take a couple! I know they'd cost but so did that little yellow sucker...... lol

The Aviator model is what led me to CRK from Randall Knives. I still don't have a CRK but I will get one this year.

Nick I have never seen a yellow one. Indeed that one you have shown is the first which leads me to believe that it was recoated later.
As for your round one on your Aviator, that too seems inconsistent. I would wager that that was either a one off special order, prototype or retrofit.

Chris made many of the orange ones and I used to sell them as an optional extra.

Hi Steven. Sorry I missed your reply.
I have just spotted another of the Aviator round butt caps on the CRK DVD.
I have a letter from Anne Reeves relating to this knife. It is a very early version, made in D2. In her words " The reason the cap and sheath are unusual is that they pre date the well known versions. The cap was the first iteration in the development of the butt cap - from this style it went to a hexagonal and then to the round knurled style"...........
Need to do a bit more research on the yellow cap. Hopefully it wasn't some guy with a rattle can in his garage, lol.

Interesting! That must have been about '84-'85 or so. Do you have a pic of the sheath? Is it one of the old coke bottle shaped aviator sheaths?

Far left.

You made mention of selling the orange caps as optional extras. Were you a dealer or agent for CRK or how did that work, and what era was that?

Wow that is an early one. I have never seen an Aviator sheath like that before.

I sold the one piece knives in the UK in the mid 80's. PM me here or on SABlade if you want more info.....

Cheers

Steven

The passage below is from Anne Reeves confirming the Caps are genuine and not a rattle can special, which is rather nice!!

"Hello Nick.............

Both the orange and the yellow/green are both original! We did orange both in SA and in USA but had the yellow/green done here. We both had to do quite a bit of brain scratching to remember but as far as our memories serve, the yellow/green was a type of epoxy and not the GunKote of the orange and black. As we remember, the epoxy was quite thick and we had to tap the threads to remove the coating to make sure the cap would fit into the handles.

I hope this is helpful – be sure to let me know if you have any further questions.
Best wishes

Anne"
