One-piece knives: variation in edge bevels?

I just received my second CRK one-piece, a Mountaineer II. I also have a Shadow IV.

The first thing I noticed was how high the edge bevel is on the Mountaineer compared to the Shadow -- At its highest point, the Mountaineer's edge is about 2mm high, compared to less than 1mm on the Shadow.

I also noticed that the edge bevel was a consistent height on the Shadow, but on the Mountaineer varied from lower at the tip to about twice as high near the choil.

FWIW the edge on the Mountaineer is polished, appears to be convex, and it very sharp.

Do these variations seem normal?

I was always under the impression that a thinner edge = a higher bevel

You're right, I'm mixing terms. The bevel on the Mountaineer is considerably higher than that of the Shadow, and the bevel on the Mountaineer is about twice as high near the choil as it is at the tip.

That is intended like that! Mountaineer is more "utility oriented" knife than Shadow series, which is more suitable as a tactical tool. So Mountaineer cuts slightly better thanks to higher grind and more "steep" bevel but Shadow is generally stronger than Mountaineer (well, M. is very very strong anyway). It's even more visible in "Mountaineer I vs. Shadow III" case. Hope this helps.

EDITED: picture is better that 1k words... so take a look at the grind of these two. Oh, on 4" blades (so also thinner than 5.5" bladed series) the difference in bevel is almost not visible, but the hight of grind difference is very clear.

Thanks Piter!

I understand the height of the primary grind differs. What I'm struggling to articulate is that the edge bevels are different from one knife to the next, and, in addition, on the Mountaineer II the edge bevel varies from less than 1mm near the tip to almost 2mm near the choil.

Great pics.
