So, I see very few posts featuring CRK one piece knives, and when I do catch a glimpse, they are generally in collections, unused. I know almost nothing about them, but I saw someone selling a whole collection on the exchange and it seems that there was a broad selection. My question is what was their intended use? tactical/combat? hunting? camp knife? There are some large ones (7 and 9"). Are they comparable in utility to the larger ESEE's? Good for chopping and batoning?

Well, the OPK ( one piece knives ) were what started the whole CRK company. They were for tactical/combat, hunting, camping, edc, just like you said. They were a solid bar of steel machined into a knife, so no weak points like the typical knives of this type failed from. The blades were made in A2 tool steel and held a great edge. There were runs in 3V and when A2 was unavailable, D2 was used, but neither of these were the norm. Handles were hollow with a screw on cap to store small items. Sheaths were top notch and they made many different blade profiles. There were basically 4 sizes, but there were exceptions with some special models here and there. 9", 7.5", 5.5" 4" were the standard versions with spearpoint blades and clip point blades being the norm. When I first got into CRK many years ago, I bought like 15 OPK before I even tried the sebenza. I used them for everything. Even food prep and they always performed very well. They would serve anyone well for any task where a fixed blade is preferred. For many pics, go to my CRK History Timeline page, you will see pics of many of them that I have owned. They were discontinued a few years ago and prices have shot through the roof, easily doubling, tripling, quad.....etc. There are TONS of posts on them through this forum, just gotta dig deeper than normal as they have been discontinued for several years now. Many are probably in collections now, but I am sure many still use them, like me whole just love using and enjoying the knife. I have sold several OPK over the years, I will not sell any more of them.

As always nyefmaker come through!! Great information Tom!! I have noticed there are many of the OPK'S listed on the bay. I have been tempted but have not yet found the right one for a price that I am willing to pay. But I am sure, especially since I have been bitten by the CRK fixed blade bug with my latest acquisition (Nyala) and I of course am not comparing it to the OPK's.

There are still some good deals out there once in awhile. Just gotta pick which one you would like and keep a constant eye out there for it. Some you see going for not much more than original retail. Just shop wisely. I personally like the shadow line the most and was lucky enough to score all 4 sizes.

Here are some pics I have, which may help you guys see the differences. I still have alot of em.

4" sizes

5.5" sizes

7.5" sizes

9" sizes

There don't seem to be too many of us that have and use them that much. I have a few including a "scout" that see regular use but with the prices they go for these days it looks like they are now destined for collections rather than the battlefields, campsites, wild areas, rivers and beaches of the world. :(

WOW!! I AM BESIDE MYSELF!! (AND THAT DOESENT LEAVE MUCH ROOM HERE) :) Awesome!! Thanks for sharing!! They are all Beautiful!! I think I like the Nine inch on the bottom the best. What may I ask is that called and please excuse my ignorance!!
All the best!!
Dave

Thank you so much for the great rundown! They are definitely some of the nicest, most unique looking production fixed blades I've ever seen. I find them much more appealing than the current slab handle offerings from CRK. What was the original retail cost (approximately) for some of these? I need to start brainstorming on a ridiculous rationale to buy one... even though I have zero use for a fixed blade at this time. Thanks!

The 9" at the end of production were in the $415 range

The 7.5" at the end of production here in the $350 range

The 5.5" at the end of production were in the $255 range

The 4" at the end of production were in the $205 range.

Thanks. Wow, the markup is... significant. But it makes sense. I wonder why CRK stopped making opk's, especially considering they were the start of CRK.

The blades were rough ground in SA, then shipped to the US for completion. The gentleman that did this wanted to retire. Instead of doing everything in the US, thus price raising, Chris opted to retire the line and concentrate on new things.

Ah, I see. You, sir, are a font of knowledge. Thank you.

Must. not. buy. fixedblade that I can't use.

But they're so pretty!

I use mine, might as well enjoy them. I cant take them with me. Unless your planning on buying for an investment down the road, why not use them.....?

Haha, I meant that I have no use for a fixed blade. If I bought a CRK OPK, I would be using the crap out of it. With sebenzas and umnumzaans (and one day mnandis I'm sure) I can at least tell myself that I can rotate through them and carry them to work every day. So far in my life, I have no need of a fixed blade, just a lot of want.

I hear ya, I can carry a folder like the zaan or sebenza almost everyday, but a fixed blade, not as often. So for me, my sebenzas get used a heck of alot more than the OPK do these days.
