Hey,

I got a Swedish Army issue bayonet (WW2 vintage) that is a single piece - it's blade and handle welded together or something. Is this good or is a wooden handle better?

Well, your question is complex!

It sounds like the handle/blade is quite strong then, which is good. If you look at the cord wrapped strider models, you will see a knife with great strength. ANd if the cord is qrecked or you need to take if off for whatever reason, the handle is wide and thick enough to still act as a functional handle.

Is the handle on your knife comfortable? Is it functional?

A bare metal handle, if done right, is very strong. Adding scales or cord wrap is usually done to improve the grip, making your grip stronger, making the knife hurt less in use, etc.

I hope this helps...

The scales or wrap may also help keep you from freezing the hands in very cold weather conditions if gloves are not available.
