One Piece Line - tests?

Hey all,

I'm active duty AF, and have been looking around for a new sheath knife to toss on my kit.

I think I've narrowed it down to either a One Piece (a Mark VI i think..) or a Strider MT.

I'm not big on overly long blades - I believe they can get in the way - so I'm looking for something between 5.5-6in, something in the area of the old USMC combat knife.

What I'm concerned about is the Once Piece line busting on me, due to hollow handle.

Now I've heard some damn good things about these blades, so I figured I'd come to the experts.

I need stories, pics, thoughts, suggestions.

Help a bro out.

Also, anyone with pics of a Mark VI in color? The one on Mr. Reeve's site don't do it justice, and make it hard to see clearly.

Last question, I swear LOL. Any way to get a different sheath for these blades? SOE/Eagle/anything like that (cept BHI)?? The leather sheath won't work well with my tac vest/LBE.

Thanks again!

I don't know if this will help you, but I have not heard of anyone busting a "one piece" of any kind on the board. I've had two one-pieces over the years, the first was a mountaineer II and an aviator. The mountaineer II is the same as the mark VI, except that it has a double cross-guard. This was really handy and ended up being given to my buddy when he shipped out in the marine corp...needless to say, he was one happy crew chief (man I miss the knife).

My aviator has been with me for 3+ years now is my general camping blade. Although it is on the small size, it will skin/scale fish, make tent stakes, cut split kindling and do what ever I ask it to. It has been very easy to sharpen and maintain. I am no where near being "rambo" with it, but I doubt that this knife will fail me when I need it. I know that CRK has produced a new version of the aviator with a 5.5" blade.

I have no experience with Strider products or personally know anyone with one. In regards to sheaths, if the leather won't work for you. Get a kydex sheath made (info is availabe at the CRK website) or an Blackhawk sheath. I just got a green beret knife and am very impressed with it, but it may be on the big side if you're looking for 5.5-6" blades, it is 7" and maybe to big for your needs.

...but heavy duty too. I think you might actually like the Yarborough piece. It's got Micarta scales, and a Condura sheath, but will be lighter. Just a thought! Either way, you really can't go wrong.

I have a Sable IV and a Sable III. These are stout knives and the bit of extra weight make them a good piece for chopping. The smaller models are not all that heavy and will stand up to most anything. I have a friend who hammered his Sable IV into a tree and used it as a step. The knife held up fine. They are thick and strong but they really cut like a razor. I don't like double guards but that is your personal choice. CRK makes enough models both ways.

Here is your Mark VI from True North Knives. They know how to photograph a knife.

hi, phil!
I've got the sable IV and the MK VI form the midsize models, and also the mountaineer I and shadow III. Within the last two years I've done a lot of cutting, hacking on wood a.s.o with these knives. I hammered the bigger ones through Pinewood of 2-3" diameter. Yes, I was a bit concerned how the thin edge would so, but thy did well, no problems. So I suppose these knives to be among the BEST, definitely a good choice!

Phil, have you handled the Strider &/or Chris Reeve fixed blade knives? They're both very rugged knives, with drastically different design philosophies. If you haven't handled both, I would strongly recommend doing so.

While I own two Strider fixed blades, I like the Chris Reeve fixed blades quite a bit also. Brand new, the Chris Reeve fixed blades are sharper and have PERFECT fit and finish. The fit and finish on Strider fixed blades are fine for an EXTREME use knife. After a good sharpening, Strider fixed blades are every bit as sharp, as near to being unbreakable as a knife can be, with an iron clad guarantee. Basically, if it breaks, Strider fixes or replaces it.

Dean C. makes some nice Kydex sheaths for any knife.

You're in for a hard decision.:D
