One piece recommendations?

I'm in the market for one of the 5.5" one-piece models, mostly to carry for survival/firestarting tasks. Any recommendations as to which one might be best for this sort of use? So far the information I've gotten from BF has been very helpful: Thanks all!

SABLE IV great outdoor knife in fact I am planning on using my new one soon! I had to sell my old one due to money issues. Winter camping and fishing sounds like a good break in trip to me. But for a general outdoor knife Sable shape blade is the most productive.

LUNA,
You can't go wrong with a CRK! But for what you want a knife for, I'd look into Mission titanium knives.

luna, my preferrance is and would be either a Mark VI or a Shadow IV
if you need to stay at the 5.5" blade lenth. I rotate different knives on my BOB's and field packs for different needs and climates. But my hip knife or personal knife, that never ever leaves my side when I venture outwards is a Shadow IV or an Aviator. You mentioned firestarting, what better way to keep your tinder and strike stick at hand and protected(in handle). Your personal knife never leaves yourside. You would not only have a super well made one-piece knife but you would have a dry tinder firestarting tool as well as a compass and etc at hand. Cant get that with any other knife.
CRK one-piece knives are truely made for survival.

Good luck with your choice and have a very Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year!

Thanks Jules, same to you! And thanks all for your input. I'll let you know...

My vote would be for a Mountaineer II. I have a Mountaineer I wich I love for most camp tasks. I also have a Project I handy for large tasks. If I only carried one, it would be the Mountaineer II due to its grind and lack of top gaurd makes it easier to 'choke up' for finer tasks.

CRK 1 piece knive take a beating if you need them too. I found a small plastic compass that fits in the handle cap of the larger knives, may fit in the 5.5" as well.

You can not go wrong with a CRK one piece.

I agree about the Sable. Nice high grind for a good cutting profile, and excellent point. Mountaineer II looks nice too, but I have not owned one of these yet.

I am in the Market for a Sable like that myself. I am sure the leather sheaths will be fine if you take care of them. I have seen 60 year old WW2 sheaths that are not as well made hold up.

I have no idea why you would want a ti knife? There advantages like light weight and not magnetic and strength to weight don't even come close to making up for the crappy edge retention etc. If you need something rust resistant go with 440C(the most corrosion resistant blade steel) or even S30V but for outdoor use A2 is great. There are tons of bushcraft knives and even Mission knives made from it. Also CR has one of the nicest coatings I have ever seen so rust is not a big deal.

yes pics please congrads I promise you that this will not be your last...It's like a chip you can just have one.:D

Shadow IV arrived today! Sorry, no pics, since I don't have a camera. I took
it out and tried a number of the chopping/splitting tasks I have in mind for emergency fire starting and it works beautifully. What a superb tool! This one goes everywhere in the woods with me from now on.

I have to agree and reccommend the Sable IV. I love mine -- Great knife -- i love the blade geometry, and the price is very reasonable, But i'd say if your personak preference is for a different point style, probably any will do just fine. Each one is just optimized for slightly different tasks.

I've always liked the aviator, but I wish the sawback were available on the larger knives - specifically the Mark VI or Project I/II. They're such a useful part on a survival knife, especially one as indestructable as these.

Congrats on the Shadow IV, excellent choice for a perfect survival knife to incorporate your fire starting tools.

I spent the past couple of months deciding on a new utility knife, particularly for winter camping. I went with the Shadow IV. The top blade guard does not really interfere with my ability to place my thumb on the spine, should the task call for it. I like it, really good size. I'm not a big leather sheath fan, so I'm looking into Kydex, but the factory sheath is very well designed and made and I'll probably use it until I get a new one.
