The serial number indicates that your Mountaineer I was the 187th Mountaineer I that we made since we moved to the USA in 1989.
All South African made knives were serial numbered and, those made from 1987 onwards were marked "Made in South Africa". We immigrated to this country, arriving in March 1989, and began marking the knives from 0 again, but identified with "Made in USA". Through the course of 1995, we stopped serial numbering because it was an area where many time consuming mistakes were made and the number had no appreciable value any longer.
