I at a army/navy store and they had black katana with a cord wraped handle like a strider and kydex ( plastic ) sheath. It was only $50. I thought is was really good bare-bones approch but suspected it was knock-off. Can get one these swords online.

It is a cheap knock off of an Ontario Black Wind sword, which I don't think are that great in the first place. You can get the knock offs from companies like Bud K for about $30.00. I wouldn't actually use a sword like that, though. www.kriscutlery.com is a good source for working swords.

It's believed by many that the true art of hand forging Japanese swords is now lost.

Certainly you're not likely to find even close to authentic repros of tachi (long sword), katana, and wakizashi swords at your mall knife and cutlery store, or from the back of a martial arts magazine.

I've found most of these are just lard-ass heavy and clunky 420, or 440A stainless steel. Heck, I'd rather wield a machete or a bayonet.

Your best bet is to contact an iaido martial arts club and ask about their sources for swords. Iaido is the art of drawing, and cutting...kind of like the art of the quick draw but with spiritual overtones.
