Well after taking some advice I ground "Chip" so its chips were gone, taking for me is what is a lot of metal off the knife. Took some time to get all the RD7s together as I kept them in packs I could grab and go with. This is the RD7 I posted earlier that chipped on 1/8" brush twigs in another thread. Well after testing it with my other two RD7s and an older dated RD6 all passed a good thorough wood whacking and hacking tests but "Chip" lived up to its nick name where it chipped where the worst of the series of chips ran along the blade before I ground them out of existence. I don't think this is one I could trust to much as it was just on wood only. I "tested" the SP-51 on the same stuff I tested the RDs on, the SP-51 blew them away performance wise.

Well...this is the only official "Fail" in field knife from OKC I've had. Let see...to be fair I still got one RD6 boxed up for a reserves and or when one of my family members "Hints" at wanting one as I gave one away as a gift. But those are of the latter QC improvements. The RD7s I got have their dates before their big push QC push so I figure this one just had a bad temper. Still my general carry only knife in the woods for day woods stuff or at camp so far has been the RD7 when there has been no need for super constant wood whacking. The size is just perfect for a "One knife" option and the choil lets it do little "woods" tasks as well and many a time the hilt came in handy for various thumping and whumping. Now if OKC would make a RD with a SABER GRIND...a BIG hint of what it could do I get from my RD Tanto...it would be WOWifying! My good other two RD7s are still great stand alone blades in their own right. I find a sharpener in the pouch works good, of course I carry a folder with me as well.

I own a total of 14 OKC fixed blade knives (left in my custody other wise it would be 16, sis sort of very very long term borrowed an SP-53 for her trail work)...you might say I'm a still a big OKC fan their price point with over whelming quality and great warranty! They make knives that are meant to be HEAVY use workticool not lookticool!

Why so many knives? Because I can! Also a few here and there where they are NEEDED, and a few places they are just dang handy and the back up...it all adds up. I could of had maybe 3 or 4 uber duber expensive ones, or enough to cover various needs at various places. OKC made the latter a very more desirable option. My in the woods or carry in car combo is an SP-51 (or SP-53) paired with an RD6 with the pouches having a sharpener in one and a small quality folder (Buck 110 or Gator Blade) for smaller work.

The SP-51 is by far better with the Saber Grind, my flat ground RD9 works ok...but its choil allowing it to do smaller woodsy task and thumping and wumping hilt make it a better all round one knife like the RD7 makes a great one blade general purpose knife. But for dedicated chopping and batoning the SP-51 blows them away. Can't say any thing about the SP-50 as never had one, but its less capable than an SP-51 from what I've scene else where, my GUESS it would be like the flat blade RD9 a bit. But the larger handle of the SP-50 would give it the edge I think.

Some one today wanted advice over what big blade to get after getting sticker shock on some others he saw, I told him my top 2 favorites the SP-53 and SP-51 and he seemed to think they would work, and he saw the RD9 and saw why I prefer saber grinds, then he spotted my SP-10 and his eyes bulged seeing its Marine Bowie profile and was surprised it cost even less! Well I know he's getting the SP-10, and ordered an SP-51 because it was discontinued and an RD-Tanto (he saw mine) and RD-6. He said 3 of those knives cost what he was looking at. The SP-10 really is also a great all round woods work horse of a knife. I love mine, I just prefer the more compact package and sheath the SP-51 and SP-53 can go in to when going in to the wilder woods. The RDs I find make great fix blade multi-tool and task blades, that's their main appeal to me.
