One Small Hidden Blade

If you were to pick one small/very small knife to have on your person hidden as your very last ditch self defense/survival tool which one would you pick? Trying to think of something as far as other weapons are taken from you after a quick body search and you are taken as a POW...what little blade would you use as an attack and escape or take out as many as you can before they kill you anyway knife?

It's not a joke, it's for real. I leave for Iraq in about a week and my guys and I will be jumping around with little time on any of the built up bases, kinda out on our own. Chances are if we was able to be captured, we'd have the M-16's/Benelli Shotguns taken away as well as ka-bar or whatever else fixed blade and pocket knives. Trying to see if any of my knives I own now will do or I need to hurry up and quick order another small knife.

Thanks for any advice, if it's something expensive it would be cool to know and hear about, but not that useful except for the next war.

Mr. Rinaldi the Lil Loco seems perfect, I don't know if I've seen anything that small made well before, as I know from your rep this is. I'll see if I can scrounge the money. If so do you have any in stock that we could arrange for it to get to San Diego by the 2nd of August?

The "loco" looks good. I tie a CS pushdagger upside-down to my boot, but a pat-down would catch it.

The hideaways are another options.

Good Luck and Stay Safe!

Thanks CG, I wanted to save up for a hideaway awhile ago but never got to...

Trying to think of the best places to keep the small knife, possibly under a watch cap (beanie) if small enough...since it will be cold most of the time I'm there. Or in the fold of it, so you know exactly where it's at. Will probably keep a camillus boot knife that I "stole" off e-bay for $1.50 in one of my boots during a convoy but I think it would probably get caught in a patdown also.

Just a thought....
We practiced with our hands tied or cuffed and had to fight. Of course 'they' could tie someone front or back. I keep something hid between the duty belt and trouser belt in the small of my back.

I s'pose it comes down to how deep. A few years ago I bought a really nice leather belt with a zipper on the inside for stashing greenbacks. A Skeleton knife could fit inside the zippered compartment and I doubt it would be picked up in a patdown although if the belt came off they'd be looking for cash. A leather belt wouldn't work, but something on the inside of your web trouser belt might slip by. $.02

Don't get caught -- particularly alone.

The little Benchmade 160 TK-1 Tether would also make a good hideaway knife.

Guy I know was a cop trainer. He would always get someone in a new class to ....pat him down. He kept a NAA .22 derringer pinned under his COLLAR. Back of the neck.

They would invariably miss it.

He told me that after he clicked it in the ear of the patter, all the REST of the class would nearly STRIP him lookin for stuff.

:D

I carried numerous knives during OIF 1, but the one I carried that would fit your "needs" is the BM Tether... If you are stationed on Pendleton I would be happy to meet you and unload it for a very reasonable price... I live up in San Onofre... e-mail me...dougherty2@cox.net.

I suggest 2 hidden knives. No real serious defense knife is going to get by a serious search. I suggest one small escape tool knife hidden in the back of your waist band, maybe attached to your underware waist band. ASP makes a key-shaped folding knife with a small serrated blade and a handcuff key. This would be the knife to try and get past a serious search. You might even tape it to the base of your spine.

The other knife would be intended to surprise someone who thinks they have you under control. This would be larger and would need to be able to do some serious cutting, probably a face cut. A small knife is not your total answer, it might be more of a distraction before you used your knees, feet and elbows. I would velcro attach a home made sheath made of something like thick yet flexible nylon to the inside of my shirt (or undershirt) between my shoulder blades. This would be positioned so that the butt of my knife was just below the edge of my collar (if I wore a pack I would adjust the position of the sheath and/or keep the sheath elsewhere when I wore my pack). I would pick a rather slim knife for this purpose. A Camillus Arclite would be a candidate. If I was large and wanted a more rugged survival knife and weapon I would pick a Camillus Becker Necker, BK-11. The intent is that you can put your hands on top of your head as if surrendering. Then slip your hand down to grab the knife and execute a surprise face slash then general hand-to-hand combat.

I'm grateful for all the advice and suggestions so far...you're all great guys and one thing that's gonna suck being out there is not being able to visit blade forums :grumpy:

Mr. Mayo I wish I could take my Kel-Tec P11...but it's not allowed so...

Hopefully I never have to use any knives for anything more than utility use and downtime carving things out of wood and what not, but I'm too young and good looking to die over there because I didn't feel like carrying a few extra things

I think the most likely article of clothing you would get to keep if captured is your pants, next your blouse/jacket. Hats or shirts could be ripped away while you are ruffed up upon capture. Boots may be taken to prevent escape. Splitting the top edge/seam of the waist of the pants and making a secret velcro pocket seems to be the best place. You would need an insert/sheat for a small flat fixed blade. Look up RAID modified BDUs on www.specwargear.com They come with this pocket. A spare handcuff key hidden near the waist lower back is a good idea too. Maybe you get a chance to use the key then run off into the woods or jump a fence etc. when with cuffed hands you would have no real chance to run.

Good luck Bubba, I hope you find the right knife and make it back home safe.

A HiideAway Knife would be my first choice, but you may not be able to get one quickly. That is the smallest knife I'd consider useful for fighting.

My second thought is a Simonich Bitteroot. That's about as small a form factor as you can get and still reliably hold onto the thing under stress. Try attaching it horizontally to the inside of your waistband with tape or safety pins so it rides directly under your belt. (Just don't mount it across your spine.)

I also knew a police officer who wore one of those military-style watch bands that goes under the watch as well as around the wrist. He kept half a razor blade (cut with a hack saw) taped in between the watch and the band as a last-ditch emergency tool.

It's also worth thinking about how to employ a really small knife effectively. The tool aspect will probably be more important than its combat ability. Still, if you can get in really close, especially from surprise, you may be able to get one of the near-surface arteries. Otherwise a short blade is likely to hurt but not incapacitate.
