One thing I wish they would do for the XM18

Offer countersunk flat head screws for the domed ones, especially for the filler tab. Not only do they catch on things, they don't look very nice. Even better, hex or torx head would be more in tune with the rest of the knife, as well as other manufacturers.

I've been upgrading my standoffs, screws, etc., and I keep seeing those fugly domed Phillips heads and wishing I could get rid of those.

What other makers are you able to customize with the standoffs, scale screws, lbs, pivot, clip, filler tab, and not too mention the SF goodies...

That is pretty cool that you are able to do all that with the XM. Oh I forget the different scale choices as well.. I am damn happy I can do all that! Don't know of any other makers that offer all that..

You could always just remove the filler tab and screws then rock a little void. Other than that it's a personal adventure into flush-mounting the filler tab.

I don't have an issue with my Hinderer screws and I carry/use multiple XMs daily.

I second what they said. I carry one of my Hinderer's daily, and have never had an issue with the tiny clip/filler screws getting caught on anything. Hmm.

I don't think Bearcut was casting dispersions on the vast customizability of the XM-18. Rather, he was commenting on how 'integrated' the whole knife package appears with the hex head scale screws & LBS & then looking at the clip & filler tab screws - well, I agree with him, it doesn't look as nice as it could be.

Besides, when you take down the XM-18 (including the clip & the filler tab), it's one more tool to have at the ready.

It was a suggestion. you don't have to trash him for it...........

Nobody trashed anyone.

its a decent idea, and I have semi stripped some of the filler tab and clip screws and they can get alittle sharp, I know what he means...but Iv never put a second thought into this until now, and if I have, its just me blaming MYSELF for being too rough w the screw or over-tightening ("DOH!"). I love my XMs just the way they are! :D besides, RHK DOES tell us not to over tighten, and we all KNOW too well that small screws can strip. thats just the nature of the screw my friend! Cant really hold that against the ranch, with all they offer us, all the options like kwazy said, who else does that?!

I'd be a proponent of an RHK proprietary screw for the pocket clip/filler, those screws are the only ones on the knife that aren't made in house (which probably means it makes better business sense to outsource them rather than make them). But I have never caught them on anything nor do I believe they look that out of place or aren't in keeping with the overall quality of the XM. That being said, if RHK made them, they'd probably be an improvement.

Seems to me I remember that they used to make the hex screws for the clip and spacer. They were so small that they stripped quite easily. If I remember correctly. But... I'm old ... and...I don't always remem..... what were we talking about again?

Mike,
I know I read that too. The good/bad of phillips screws is that they were designed to cam out to avoid shearing off the head. Sometimes they work too well, other times not well enough.

I think I'll stay away from this forum for a while. Some of you people are way beyond sensitive.

From the XM Sticky Thread:

Hardware:

The standard screws, receivers, standoffs, lockbar stabilizer (LBS) and pivot components are 17-4PH stainless steel. Everything is currently made in house with the exception of the clip screws.

Clip Screws – The clip screws are 1/8” 2-56 and they appear with a variety of heads. Torx was the first style used (T6 drive) until switching over to Allen (hex) which is 0.050” drive. Around October, 2009, the screws changed to Phillips drive and #1 works very well.

Now look who is being a bit too sensitive. Relax, there is no trashing going on.

The screws are awfully small, it may not make sense to make them in house, particularly since the current ones get the job done and all of the RHK CNC machines aren't exactly spending a lot of time idle. It also may not be feasible to make a countersunk flat head version either, those clips/fillers aren't exactly very thick and countersinking into that clip and making it half as thick where it is fastened to the knife may be too weak. And if you made flat head versions similar to say the standoff screws (rather than the domed ones there now) and they were on the surface, they may catch on things even more quickly.

But what do I know, just rambling.

I actually really like the feel and look of those screws. It helps make the knife feel like a "tool" for hard use. ( which it is ) But I understand what you are trying to say :)

Here we go :)

VERY NICE!!! & better looking as well!!!

Now how to get them to not strip so easily..........

Actually the first time I've ever paid attention to the clip screws after reading this. Hex would probably look better but I guess I've just never really noticed it.
