One thing I've been considering

I can get an orange or yellow hi vis vest for free from work , so I was thinking of adding one to my gear . They weigh virtually nothing and will make me more visible if I need to be rescued. Can you guys suggest some other uses for it ?

If its made of the right material you could probably cut some pieces off of it to use as kindling.

I've got one here ready for mods. It's been sitting here a while now waiting a turn. I don't plan to go nuts on it. It's mesh so very breathable and I'm loathed to suffocate it. I want a pouch for a power supply. A pouch to balance that up, that'll be for phone / GPS. Stowage for a map. A dump pocket for random crap. Other bits will just be hooks / clips for gloves, hat, and a couple of free ones.

Very useful if you are doing anything near traffic. Day or night I wear one when I step out of my vehicle. I also wear them when riding bikes or walking dogs around traffic. The pooch gets one too.

Beyond that I'd look at other visibility increasing uses. I would not go cutting it up unless I had a spare one around. You could wrap it around the carry handle of your bag to make it easier to find. Or attach it to things you want to mark. Or use it as a signalling aid for air rescue.

I suppose in a pinch it could work like any other bit of cloth for doing cloth things. Drying things, shading things, oven mitt etc.

The big thing is visibility though and that is worth having IMHO.

I carry one to use if I'm walking where hunters are out and about. Helps to make it clear I'm not a deer or a pig.

+1 That's good point.

I don't have a hi-vis vest, but a pair of hi-vis removable sleeve is in my pack whenever I go hiking. It's quite useful when I am hiking in winter to keep my arms warm or prevent serious sunburn in summer, and I tie it to my tripod when I am out taking photos for sunset/sunrise(so people won't kick my tripod).

I'd not get into the habit of taking things home from work. You don't need that kind of attention.

What attention ? Even my boss has told me that if I want something , ask and I can have it. It's mostly electrical stuff though , power boards , adapters , rcds , circuit breakers , extension leads , power points , wall plates , exhaust fans etc. can get them plus bug repellant lamp globes and UV globes for free as long as I only want a couple . Got a whole warehouse of globes too

Visibility is always a concern when camping and photographing during hunting season in crown land. Bear bell on walking stick as well.

To see this ...

A little caution is a small effort ...

I wear one when I'm in my kayak, especially on lakes where there are bigger boats.

Other use.... perhaps skeeter barrier in a pinch?? Fine screen for catching small fish, survival??

I keep a orange vest in the tool box of my truck, I've used it on the end of lumber hanging out the back of my truck bed so people can see it better.

Also, I wear it when changing a flat tire on the side of the road.

Sure couldn't hurt to increase your visibility when in need of help. Another thing that is easy to carry is surveyor's tape. It's plastic tape in bright neon colors. It could be used to mark your trail or brighten up your location if you have parked in one location.

Wife and I would toss them on for long highway motorcycle trips. I also tend to wear a blaze ball cap when metal detecting in the fall.
