I have known about balis for a long time, but for some reason I just got interested in them a few days ago. I guess I was more interested in tactical folders because they seemed faster to open. Well the funny thing is that my roommate has had a couple of cheap pos black handled balis he got of blade auction to practice sharpening, and he has had them sitting around for like two years. Anyway, I was messing with it the other day trying to figure out how to open them one handed, and couldn't do it. So two days ago I found Xtremebalisong.com, and now I am addicted. I finally realized that it isn't just about what knife you can open fastest, its about what one you can play with the most, and balisongs definately rule there. The problem is that the pos he has has already gotten super sloppy just from us messing with it for like three days. So I want to pick up a decent quality, low price one until I can afford a Tachyon. I am thinking I should keep it under $50, and somewhere around $20 to $30 would be even better. I don't like serrations. I am really excited about learning all the moves, this has the potential to be a really fun hobby.
Thanks a lot!!

Sounds like you should be getting yourself a Jaguar. When you're going that low, that's probably the best choise.

Now notice: The tang pins on the Jag are HOLLOW, so after some manipulation, they will most likely break, and one of the handles will fly across the room and break something, or knock out someone within a certain radius.

But don't fear - Clay has an article on his site somewhere that describes how to replace those broken tang pins. And if that isn't good enough for ya, send the blade to Mer for some rehandling job. :D

ix is right, I think the Jag is what you're looking at. Pretty standard decent knife. And when you break it you can send it to Mer to get rehandled... :)

Go to www.knifezilla.com and order a Pacific Style Trainer.

Buy some band-aids

Immediately remove that poor excuse for a latch!

Flip & flip & well you get the idea.

This is a very sturdy bali for the price ($40). You won't run into the Jag problems.

I personally wouldn't get the pacific trainer I'd got with one of the Jags (maybe the Jag trainer but I haven't tried it before.) Using the instructions on Clay's site to repin it takes no time at all and mine has lasted over a year so far (with a couple of repinnings).

A jag.

Or, and I know you're wanting to say under $50, but do think about maybe a BM42. If you shop around, you can usually find one somewhere online in the $90-110 range. Twice what you wanted to pay? Yes. But easily ten times the knife you'd get for $50.

The Pacific Style isn't a bad suggestion. You can read a review on my site where this knife is known as a "Chinese Sidewinder." Just keep in mind that it's not going to exactly be shaving sharp for 'ya. So, if you're looking for a practical knife, stick with Jag or try to make the stretch to a BM42.

$50 more dollars will buy you much more than twice the knife for sure!! Seems worth it to me..., but anyway..., welcome to the Forum.., come back and let us know how you are doing!

Well after seeing what is available for less than $50, I think I will just save up for a tachyon. It sounds like the cheapies will just break anyway. Thank you for all the suggestions though, I am really looking forward to learning from all you guys!

While I'm sure a Tachyon is nice (don't have one) it is about four times out of your range and a BM is only twice. I'd personally go with the BM.
