I've been wanting to move away from paypal for a while after all the horror stories...

I tried Freshbooks for a bit, and it worked pretty good but it was $15-25/month and was pretty buggy. There was also an issue w/ a customer limit.

So I just found Wave Invoicing. It's much like paypal in that it is easy to use and free (monthly) with similar credit card rates. There is also an option for customers to pay via bank transfer and the rate is only 1% which is neat.

My main issue is: would they allow knife makers to sell knives on their platform? I had an issue w/ Quickbook payments declining me due to that. But I got confirmation in writing from Wave that knife sales are no issue at all, so that's encouraging.

Anyway, wanted to pass the word along. I'll update here in the future as things progress.

Why not use something like Harvest and send invoices? Or Shopify if you’re maintaining an online store? Or Stripe directly?

I have the same problem, I've been looking for a good app for this for a long time. I will try it, thanks.

Wave continues to work flawlessly... wish they had a 'tip' field like paypal but oh well :)

Thanks for posting this.

I was kicked off Stripe for selling "weapons". I have been using PayPal since.
Be careful with PayPal... They seized several knife makers funds last year that I'm aware of and wouldn't give it back, was several thousand dollars.

i have been buying and selling knives for many years via paypal. never an issue. my paypal email address even has the word "knives" in it. if thats not a red flag, i dont know what is. i heard on facebook - peoples accounts get closed/investigated because they do all their business as "friends and family" to avoid fees. so, paypal is free to them. paypal notices you cannot possibly personally know all those customers and family members, and investigate and close the account.

Yeah, but for me PayPal worth the risk when I know of two specific makers that got funds seized.

PayPal can be a great hassle for a seller (I used to sell watches for my dad on eBay). As a customer I insist on paying through PayPal and pay with goods and services. If the seller is hesitant I offer to pay the extra for the PayPal fee.

I've also had an issue towards the middle of 2020 where someone filed a chargeback on a small item I was selling on eBay... But you absolutely cannot get anyone live to speak to and they aren't very responsive to email. It can be quite frustrating for sure. Wave has reps available all the time, even with covid.

Yeah, and the automatic process is made to cover the buyers rights. Seller will go through an extensive procedure to get his money back once it has been frozen and depends greatly on the buyers good will. Which is awful if the buyer is a dishonest or dishonorable person.

I also just started with square. I use venmo and PayPal as well.
Square charges higher fees if the credit card is keyed in rather than swiped, so keep that in mind.

It’s also against squares policy to sell knives. They can shut down your account. Same with stripe, PayPal, and most others

Huh? What the hell? Please elaborate.

Two I know for sure of on Instagram are darriel_caston (lost about $9k - don't think he ever got it back) and vasana_bladeworks_dave_brown (lost several thousand dollars, not sure if it ever got resolved). Also I heard that Adam Purvis may have had issues too. You can reach out to them for more info, I'm not sure of the specifics if it was because of using f&f or selling weapons.

Yes which is why I use Wave - I have in writing from them that knives are fine. Been working amazing and it's free (other than transaction fees).
