Hi all,

I'm interested in learning more about the process of knife making through the stock removal process. Are there any online resources that cover some or all of the steps involved? I'm somewhat experienced in welding and metalwork, and have a good workshop. The only thing I'm missing is a belt grinder and any clues.

Any pointers appreciated.

Cheers,
Tim

Tim, I'm sure there are some knifemakers in Melbourne. Best thing to do is go visit one and see how he does it. You can also get a better idea about equipment that way.

Email me if you have any specific questions.

Greetings Tim_marsh...

firstly welcome to the australian world of knives.
=)

there are a number of people in Melbourne that work in stock removal ... i could email you some details (if they dont mind surrendering them) ...
if you are interested in finding out about the process that way .. ??? i find it is a lot easier learning when you actually get to look at things and how they are done.

but i dont actually know of any online resources as such.

Tim,

Allen Blade just produced a flat grinding video. You can find it in this forum under 'Exchange/For Sale by: Makers'. I recently received a copy and highly recommend it. I have been working off of a rest and experimenting for the past few months with my Grizzly grinder (which Allen also uses for flat grinding). My process was close to his, but I wasted alot of time getting there. After watching his video, I tried his method without the rest. I was surprised to discover I could actually grind well without the rest for support. Within an hour, my grinding skills had improved greatly and I am no longer afraid to grind all the way to the spine.
