Hi,

Just started getting interested in lathes and mills. Does anyone know of any online beginner tutorials into how to operate these things?

Thanks!

Here are a few links that should get you started.

This first one is courtesy of your federal goverment. Very comprehensive
http://www.metalworking.com/tutorials/ARMY-TC-9-524/9-524-index.html Chapter 7 if for lathes but lots more good shop info.

This one is to Linsay Books. The have reprints of some great early training books. 'How to Run a Lathe" from South Bend is a classic. The fundementals of machine work have not really changed much over the years. Very resonably priced and full of good info.

This last one is something I had saved as a reference site in my favorites.

Hope this helps.

A metal lathe will almost teach you how to use it. Within a few months of getting mine I was learning all sorts of tricks and techniques. The more you use it the more you find out just what it can do. I use it alot to chuck up assorted stones and rotary files for finishing or shapping. Just using sanding drums alone in the horizontal position will allow you to do some interesting things. You can also make some interesting knife handles by stacking different materials onto an arbor and cutting, filing and sanding the whole stack at one time. When your done you slide the pieces off and then slide them on to the tang.

I look at my lathe as a giant Dremel tool.

you can also use a lathe as a mill. you can make workholding jigs for the carriage. once you have a few jigs you can chuck mill bits and use them to make handles, guards etc.i will try to post some diagrams for it
