Only a knife, but.....

After a flood/tidal surge at our house my wife managed to rescue most of my knives, although many have been exposed to salt water and will need attention. Worse than this was the theft of some of my knives by a family member when my safe box was unlocked to check the status of my knives. My first and most treasured fiddleback - Kephart 5/32 TT spalted maple burl took the brunt. I managed to recover it but, it's not looking healthy:

Before-

After-

As some wise men have told me over the last few days, they are only knives but it's hard not to be a little distressed...

You can always replace things...custom knives like yours are hard to replace and the memories you have made with them are priceless. I would cry a little...

That really sucks man, and by a family member even. I'd be soo pissed!

I hope you took an additional 50 bucks to cover the spa-treatment as well when you took the knife back.

Indeed. I've never been a materialistic person, I live in a shack and cook on a wood stove, and if all my knives were washed away in a tidal wave, so be it. The fact that at a vulnerable. time, a family member took advantage is the thing that grates most. that being said I love that Kephart...!:)

woh sorry to hear about your misfortune brother. good on the mrs. for watching out for the knives though! hope you guys are recovering okay.

It's not just a knife, It's a FiddleBack.
Seriously though, I'm sorry about your misfortune. I would be crashed if anything happened to any of my FBs. Good work by your wife for saving the day, could have been worse...

I guess what hurts the most in this terrible story is that it was a trusted (no more) family member. I had a boss in the late 80s tell me something that I still live by today. Trust, until you are given a reason not to. Then don't.

Sorry to hear about the flood, and even worse being betrayed by a relative. I have a theory, your relatives are not your choosing - your family is. Not to go too deep, but it does look like you chose one family member who's as good as they come, your wife.

That sucks Jules. Sorry to hear about the flood. Really sorry to hear about the family member. Family members can be disappointing sometimes. Hopefully that family member returns what he took. Keep your head up buddy.

Terrible about the flood/tidal surge, but it sounds like everyone is safe and, if correct, that is a good thing. Just awful about that relative taking advantage of your trust.

Jules, I hate to hear this. I'm glad the family is ok. It's sad to hear about the loss of some great knives to both mother nature and a fool of a family member.

I'm sorry to hear that Julian especially about the family member. I hope things turn around for you and your family quickly.

Bear71- Pare I am sorry to hear of this trouble. Marikina and Anitipolo are sinking as well. Family is placing everything up high. I am glad your family is safe- much more important that tarnish on knives. That one family member will have to face disgrace from here on.

God Bless and take care. I would still rather be where you are than where I am ;)

Ingat palagi,
Bill

Sorry to hear the bad news, Julian. I am glad you and your wife are ok. Best of luck in the cleanup and I hope you get the others back.

Expose the family member to everyone. File a police report. Theft by family is the lowest!

Thanks all for your kind words and support, it's been a strange year with the major typhoon destroying the house last November and subsequent trials. As I've stated before, being part of this community, has developed into so much more than being a place to purchase (exquisite) knives. It really is a pleasure, and privilege to be a part of something with y'all (British guy attempting US colloquialism)!

Bear,
You lost me at colloquialism. Damn, that's hard to type - much less pronounce.

Bear, everyone was safe during this last storm? For those of you who might not know there was a huge storm that left a lot of flooding and even spawned tornadoes on islands that weren't hit directly by the flooding.

Here is what Manila looked like.

I know I have offered before, but if y'all need some time to relax and put it behind you I have two extra beds (with air con!) here in Iloilo that y'all are welcome to. If y'all are in need of anything just let me know, happy to help where I can.

Sorry to hear about your in-laws. It's a shame, but not a week goes by that I don't hear of it happening to a foreigner. Unfortunately jealousy is rampant here. I love that my in laws live in Manila and are afraid of flying lol. Gives us a healthy distance.

PM me your address and I will try to get a package out to you in October. Not much, but it should get you on track with restoring that blade, and maybe an extra thing or two ;) Little stuff that I had to have imported like flitz, abrasives, steel wool, rust removing cloth, etc

Jules,

I'm sorry for the bad news (plural). I hope this will be a lesson for your relative and a turning point! Keep the blades oiled until you have time to work on them, oxygen sure fuels that rust! I left an 01 (not Fiddleback) in a fishing pail years ago and it got rained on overnight. It was in a leather sheath. Pitting formed overnight, but it still is a user with dark patina, just three dimensional patina! LOL

Stay safe!
-Will
