gec pioneer in burnt--mink skinner in ebony--& stock whitt in banana
4.5 in. in pioneer --3.5 in. in mink--& 4 !/8 in whitt. can you believe one in. can make that much difference in these patterns?

Thanks for the comparison shot Dennis. I've been wondering how much smaller those are. I think the width makes as much of a difference as the length, maybe even more so. Is it just the lighting or is there a big color variation in that ebony?

Here's some more pattern scaling comparisons. On the left we have two AG Russell Jess Horn patterns (both made by Moki) - 4" compared to 3 3/8". On the right we have two older three-eye Eye Brand 4 blade congresses - 4" compared to 3 1/2". The two smaller knives have been long time EDC knives for me -- the larger ones, not so much.

One inch apart between the pionner and mink but I bet a huge difference in weight.

zerogee the 3 eye schlipers are some of the best users to ever come down the pike. you have good tastes.

Thanks Dennis -- I've never used the bone 3 eye congress, but the yellow 3 eye has some of the finest steel of any knife I've ever owned, bar none. It was my main EDC for years.

I really like the 4" versions of various knives. Just seem to fit my hand better. I have a couple 4" stockmans. I'd actually like to find a 5 incher. Anyone know of one?

nightshifter the eyes were issued in 4.5 in. stocks for a long time . used to carry one in my pack to back up my straight knife when hunting. they meay have made a stock even larger but my memory falters .

With folding knives even 1/8" makes a difference to how the knife feels and fits in-hand. a 1/4" change in closed length becomes a big difference.
i think that part of why such a small difference in closed length makes such a difference, is that the knife may also be proportionally deeper and thicker, and open the master blade and change in length is nearly doubled.
very important if ordering a custom knife. 3 5/8" will look and feel different from the same knife at 3 1/2".

Right on the money there, Roland.

For so many years I carried a 3 7/8th Buck stockman, and didn't think it was big at all. But when I carried the 303 cadet for a few weeks when one came my way, I was very surprised at how it did a disappearing act in my pocket when compared tot he 301 model. Just a fraction of an inch made a huge difference in pocket comfort. A 3 1/4 inch knife vs a 3 7/8th inch knife.

Sometimes it don't take much.
