Only one khukuri?

Here is an annoying philosophical question. The average person in Nepal only gets one khuk to use for everything. So if you could only have one which would one would it be (and why)? Don't you hate questions like these?

Yes, that's why I don't usually answer them

Gelbu Special. 'nuff said?

Tom

Agreed. The Gelbu Special can do it all.

Oh, I forgot...I haven't been posting much because I was in a motorcycle accident in July. Got busted up pretty bad.
But I have been lurking the past couple of weeks.

My accident was the result of a young woman in a new car paying no attention to her driving. I simply could not avoid her car.
I had a compound fracture of both bones in my lower left leg, 4 fractured ribs, 2 fractured vertebrae, and a partially collapsed left lung. A good helmet probably saved me a concussion or broken facial bones.
I am currently wearing a back brace and going around on crutches.
Trying to be grateful to the Higher Power that I was not more seriously hurt.
I hope to ride again, but at my age (49) healing is a little slower than it used to be. Maybe by the first of 2001, I will be on my own two feet without the "sticks."
I dunno about the prognosis on my back...I may have some pain for the rest of my days.

What has this got to do with Khukuris?

Heh heh heh...

18" WWII

Reasons: chops well (better than an 18" Ang Khola on hardwood), slices well, not too heavy, does not poke the back of my legs when I carry it, probably a decent weapon, and nice looking. By all accounts the GS shares these attributes but I don't own one.

Glad you survived Mike, hope you recover soon.

Will

Best of luck on the recovery Mike, "old age"

does slow down the recovery.

I took a bike into some trees down in FL 20 years ago when I was 35, multiple injuries, 1.5 years, & 15 operations later before I was walking without "sticks".

You just don't "bounce back" when you get older

"Old age is a bitch". "Yeah, but it beats the hell out of the alternative".

Thanks, Will.

Mike, that was a BAD accident but could have been worse. And, as an old trail rider who had to take to California freeways to get down to the Baja trail before it was paved I know the story or riding amidst dangerous drivers! I hope you recover fully! As my Cherokee brother and I know from experience living with a bad back is little better than death!

Welcome back, Mike, and best of luck with your recuperation.

As to choosing only one khukuri, it's a horrible thought
wink.gif
but I'd have to pick my 18" WWII. It's currently tied with my Gelbu Special as my favorite but I have yet to bring myself to actually use the GS. I agree with Will that the WWII is a good chopper and I find it to be very nimble in my hands.

Mike, was she talking on one of those dayumed Cell Phones?!?!?

Glad you are still alive and kickin!! And that it wasn't any worse!!!

I saw the results of a really bad motorcycle wreck when I was almost 6 years old and that put a huge impresson on my mind.
That old Harley could have been put in an orange crate, And that includes the huge crash bars that were on the front of it!! I have rode one a few miles, but never would own a scooter myself.

I do hope your back gets alright.
Like Bro says that can be worse than death sometimes. And ya can bet yer butt that when it starts gettin cold or rainy that you will know about it before it happens.

To the khuk question.

That's Nepal!!!
Aren't ya glad ya live here and don't have to use _just one_ khuk?

I have a feeling the one I would choose if I could have only one is one that don't have. And that's the baby GRS.
Somehow, one of these days, I am gonna have to figure out how I can justify having one of those.

Until then I will stay with my 18"AK the best knife in the world.

I'd have to go with my Bhudhuni Villager as my first choice and either the Gelbu Special or the WWII as my second choice.
No insults intended, but there is something magical about how the Bhudhuni feels in my hand. It chops well and slices well in my hand.

Harry

There can be only one...

As to *why* I'd choose the 25" Kobra... It combines strength with delicacy and grace, it's balanced and profiled to perfection, it's unbreakable and you can use it all day without getting tired. That little bit of extra length makes the world of difference when cutting briars and undergrowth, without the penalty of superfluous weight. It'll slice a single sheet of copy paper, or hack down a tree, or you can turn it round and drive nails with the spine. The balance gives you enough control to cut tenons, and the momentum to slice through 3" branches with one unforced swing. You can carry it on your belt for hours as you tramp through the woods and not know it's there. If it has any faults, I haven't encountered them yet.

Did I mention that I quite like this knife?

Motorcycle accidents; there was this woman who pulled out of a T junction without looking. I guess her mind was on something else at the time. My bike was a write-off. Before that, I lived to ride... Now, I wouldn't get on a bike if you paid me a thousand dollars. Too scared.

Please accept my sympathy, and I hope you make a full recovery.

...of the khukuris i have right now, i would have to say my special order BAS by Bura.
however, that might change if that 15 sirupati ever makes it here.
i like the light, fast khukuris because they are easy to carry and don't wear out my wrists as fast. of course, i do loose a lot of chopping power, but since i am not chopping down any logs in my tiny apartment anyhow, that doesn't seem to matter much.
oh, and did i mention it's a whole lot easier to conceal a 15" blade compared to a GRS

Tatsuo, what do you mean that a GRS is a little difficult to conceal?

I just shove mine a bit further down the pant leg and have no problems.

My WWII bladed Hanuman just feels the best of the lot. I might consider a matched pair of 12" AK's though...

... if you could only have one ...
It is a scary condition! ... Some of us are Khukuri collectors! ... Don't tell me that we have to collect a dozen of heads to collect a dozen of Khukuris? Of course ... I guess it will work fine with 18" WW II!

Only one

! I guess it would be my Chiruwa 20" Sirupati. Slender and easy to carry, can chop pretty well, and works well as a weapon.

The Gelbu Special would be in there too, but I would like it in a Chiruwa style. Hint, Hint, Uncle!
