Onslaught mod

Other than a loose/slick belt clip that needed to be scuffed and tightened, my only other big complaint with my new Onslaught was the "flying" false edge. It made the knife uncomfortable to hold when closed, ridiculously wide when closed, and gave an already massive knife an unnecessarily aggressive aesthetic when open (especially an EDC knife that will be used around sheeple). I extended the straight line of the spine at the grips, eliminating a little "shark fin" of material. I was a little nervous to attempt the mod myself, but I'm ecstatic with the results:

Lmao, so would I! Unfortunately I don't have a CNC machine. What you see represents about 2.5 hrs of hand grinding on a medium stone. I was afraid that a bench grinder might screw up the heat treatment. Getting that curve right and meeting the tip perfectly are not things I'm willing to attempt by hand right now. Maybe after I've carried it for a couple of years...

I think a round file in a vice may work, that kinda depends on the file though.

Looking good.

An improvement! You obviously are careful-- you needn't worry that grinding the spine will screw up the HT.

Looks good! I also contemplate that modification for quite a while. I am thinking about Mini version - I think it will also look great! I have got the regular one as well, but I do not think I will carry it around ever: with modification or without. Is it discontinued BTW?

It is listed as discontinued on the Benchmade website. Places still have them in stock, though. I've been curious about the knife because I enjoy rather large folders, but am disappointed the blade is only 154cm as I prefer other steels. The knife also isn't as aesthetically pleasing as other Benchmade knives to me.

That knife is huge! I have got one and only kept it because I hardly ever got rid of any knives I owned once. Its size is a bit extreme from my personal point of view: so I am not really surprised BM struggled with moving these knives. But the mini version is simply brilliant! I have got two: the regular version and that even nicer one with carbon fibre and D2 blade. If I decide to make the same mod: I will probably have to buy another one specially for that!

Nice mod. While these are in design very close to the original Lum designs, the harpoon blade shape isn't everyone's cuppa. There are versions that have had the 'swoop' taken right down to the spine and it does look better. The larger 741 is the only knife ever bought that makes my wife laugh...the overall size of the thing is made for gorillas and not humans I think...! (But it really does slice.)

What about me? Oh right the knife :D
You did a wonderful job Austin! That looks like it came factory that way. I think it would look even better with it all ground off like others have said.

I think you did a very clean job of that, I'm prone to do mods like that myself, did one similar on a Spyderco Stretch, for some reason the hump irked me ;) but then later, I got another Stretch and I wasn't as moved to do that again.

And today, I received a large Onslaught in the mail, had to help the mail lady carry in the box, man these things are huge! :) and also very nice !
And for me, I like the looks and lines of the original design, if you grind out the top swedge you'd have more or less a Persian style looking blade maybe? but as I always say, the heart wants what the heart wants and for some it doesn't play out well, others like it just fine. Here is a shot of the knife in hand, just a quick shot with my ipod touch, but you can see this is a LARGE knife ! or...I'm just a very small man ;)

+1

I was never crazy for the ergos on the Onslaught (and that the steel choice was only upgraded to D2), but very nice mod! Looks good :thumb up:

I do have one point to add about the Onslaught, It does make a good skinner ;) I’ll try and dig up some old pics

Interesting idea though not sure I want to try it on my recently acquired 741BK Onslaught due to the black finish blade. For working hardened steel when needed I have a set of four grits of full size diamond files that I found on Amazon for reasonable prices. These are 14" overall length files including 4" handles with file blades about 1" wide and 3/16" thick.

Thanks guys, been carrying it since that post and I'm still happy with it. I'm still impressed with action of the axis lock every time I open and close it. I've gotten used to the size, although I still notice the weight if its clipped in a baggy pocket and can flop around at all.

I still get the hankering to take the swedge down a little more, and might attempt to do so. As for the Spyderco Stretch, I picked up one of those too in a trade, and could live without the weird bump. For some reason, though, I'm less bothered by funky blade shapes and overall styling on Spydercos than Benchmades. I tend to want my Benchmade to look a little more traditional/conservative.
