could anyone who owns a 10 inch ontario machete tell me what you think of it? the tip looks too rounded to be able to chop with at all. exactly how thick is the spine? any chipping ever with the 1095? im basically comparing the rtak and economy machete because these are my final 2 choices for large knife. how is its edge retention? does it seem like its had a proper temper? anyone have pictures of the spine?

I have around 10 machetes from different companies and I always have an Ontario machete strapped on my quad and one in my truck. Not sure about specs and such, but they're tough as nails, sharpen up easily, and hold a good edge. Great value, tough tools. Hope this helps.

I've got a 12" Ontario...they are dull out of the box but are easy to sharpen & hold a decent edge & are pretty tough. But if your looking for a good deal on a large chopper then I'm gonna say - KA-BAR/Becker BK9
Hard to beat for the money spent & I love mine...built like a tank but to heavy for belt wear !

For a quality machete go with Condor (the most premium machetes out there right now) Ontario, Hansa, Tramontina, or Imacasa (Condor's parent company).

Any of those manufacturers will give you fantastic performance, though only Condors and Ontarios come sharpened already. The lack of edge is considered a design feature--allowing you to put whatever kind of edge on it that you want, whether it be for light brush or heavy hardwoods. Typically there will be a rough grind established for you so you don't have to file as much, but it'll still take some time with a coarse file.

And Cam at Machete Specialist is the MAN! (as well as the only source for Imacasa and Hansa in the US):thumbup:

never used a condor but they sure look like pieces of shit to me. in my opinion the best chete is the kabar kukri. kukri over the cutlass because its slightly longer and heavier and because of the shape you can use the tip as well as the belly. but anyways... yea i was thinking about getting the bk9.. also the RTAK2. im pretty much set on the rtak right now though im doing some final comparisons between mainly these 3 blades. the ontario CT1 seems too thin although assuming it has a good temper (dont know if ontarios are tempered well in the first place... their sheaths are trash) then it would be a decent blade but a little lighter/thinner that i would need.

I have a 12" Machete with D-guard from Ontario. It's a pretty good chopper. For me, the rounded tip doesn't interfere with chopping, I actually like it. It's good for slashing water bottles and cardboard targets when I can't cut wood.

Buy it and try it. If you don't like it, you can always trade it or sell it.

Wow. You've REALLY never used one. They're the finest machetes available on the production market bar none. Try getting one in hand before passing such extreme judgment. Their parent company, Imacasa, has been in the business in one shape or form since 1787. They know a thing or two.

Having your own opinion is one thing. Calling a product you've never seen, held, or tried a piece of garbage is another thing entirely.
