so i am for sure gonna buy the ontario 12" machete but cant deside if i want the straight back or the saw back. any suggestions? mainly gonna use for camping, nothing to extreme, also it doesn't Come with a sleeve. So any suggestions on where to buy, material, and price?
Thanks

Plain back for sure. A saw back is just going to be a nuisance.

hey thanks guys for the info.. so i got an other question, how good is the CUSTOM BLACK KYDEX SHEATH FOR THE OKC RANGER RD4, it came with an over sized BLACK NYLON SHEATH WITH PLASTIC INSERT, i want something smaller so i can stuff it in my jacket or pant cargo pocket if i need to.

I have one of the Ontario machetes and love it.Mine has the plain back. I use a file to sharpen to the blade and it keeps a good edge.

I have one in both plain and sawback.

I have never use the saw, as stated the saw just gets in the way.

Good choice they are one of my favorites

ok so now i am looking for a sheath. i am really intrested in finding a kydex sheath but can find one, i wanna try to make my own but dont know what thickness to buy. what thickness is good for machete anybody have any suggestions?

i found a web this site that sells kydex

http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=41_54_136

what is the difference in thinkness .08 .093 and .125? i'm looking for a thickness closest to 1/8". "i'm guessing that would be the best to work with" i'm new to this kydex stuff never heard of it until i bought my ontario RD-4

Which custom sheath, the Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop sheaths? Those are great, the belt loop is mounted by two screws that are on one side. They kydex for those is thick, good rivets/grommets.

I have several machetes and no kydex sheaths for any of them. For the Ontario 12" Cutlass Machete, I got the Blackie Collins sheath. It is a thicker nylon with a liner. It's pretty good. Leather would be awesome. Kydex is a good material for sheaths, but like leather, how much do you want to spend on dressing up a $20 machete?

good point but I'm not dressing my machete, I'm making a home for It for when It's not in my hand. So I am gonna make my own sheath.

By dressing, I sort of meant "pants", and at the same time I was saying that a nice sheath would be more expensive than the machete. So, I wasn't trying to say that's a bad thing. I'd like a nice sheath, it could outlive the machete and be a home to the next one. As long as it works though, right!
At the same time, what ever sheath you use should be able to protect you from the blade. In the event of a fall, for example. I don't know how safe my fabric sheaths really are. Hope I never find out!
Those Chestnut Ridge Kydex sheaths are built very well, you'll like it!
