I recently purchase a Ontario air force survival knife. When I opened up the box I notice that there were no markings stamped on the blade. So I'm asking what gives? How would anybody know that the knife was even made in the USA.

So are you questioning the place of origin or if you have a legit Ontario?

It's probably just a defect in the manufacturing

I have one just the year of manufacturing on the pommel on mine . think they are all that way. Great little knife once you get them sharp. Just use neetsfoot oil or snow seal to darken it up . believe I read that marble made the very first of them in the early 60s

Make sure you bought an Ontario. All Ontario knives I own have n Ontario mark on them. Like the Mark II Kabar, it may have been made by multiple companies, so if it's used, it might be another maker. I'll look at my ASEK, but almost positive says Ontario like all the other Ontarios I have. BTW, there are copies out there that are new. A company named Rothco makes one that is sold on a particular South American River site that always shows up right with the real deal when you search for the Ontario ASEK.

brought the knife from Midway came in a box stating it was a Ontario knife don't think it a copy. Just surprise it's not stamped USA like my Ka-bar. Checking the Midway web site to see a closer view of the knife. It doesn't show any marking. Issue I have I only buy made in USA knifes. Am disappointed it's not stamped, might have to reach out to the Ontario knife company and ask why.

Its a bit off topic but do you or anyone else here know what is up with Rothco? Are they an actual manufacturer of the knives or do they just market stuff. I see them selling all sorts of military type gear on that site but the knives look to me like Ontario.

I did a Google image search for "ontario air force survival knife" & the ones I see have no markings on the blade tang but have "Ontario" & what looks like a date on the pommel nut.

Aside from the Spec Plus knives, the only Ontario knives I have are the M3 Trench knife & the fancy, polished stainless version of the Mark II ("Ka-Bar") USMC combat knife. The M3 says "US M3 Ontario 1943" on one side & nothing on the other. The gussied up Mark II combat knife says "US Ontario" on one side & "Combat USMC" on the other. I'll be buying an Ontario AFSK soon & I'll try to remember to post what mine is like.

Is this the leather wrapped handle or Kraton model? If it's the model with the Kraton handle, it's the SP25 and the markings should be stamped on the sides of the pommel.

They are not all that way. Ontario stamped the pommel of their Jet Pilot Survival Knives.

I have the SP2, SP25 and "classic" pilot knife. The pilot knife has "Ontario 5-01" stamped on the side of the pommel like Leghog's example, but it's so faint I could barely read it under direct light. I have bought numerous knives (incl. Ontario) from Midway before and had no concerns about the legitimacy of the products, for whatever that may be worth.

I got mine two weeks ago with the kraton handle and cordura sheath . Mine as ontario USA at the bottom of the blade . This mite be because it's an export . But i don't know .

So how does the modern Ontario pilot knife compare to the original ones made by Camillus and the like?

Does it have the metal cap-type pommel like the original version, or is the Kraton molded around the pommel? The former is an SP25 which should have the Ontario stamp on the pommel, and the latter is an SP2 which would have it stamped on the blade . . . or that's how mine differ.
