I just bought the Ontario Bowie. I used it to cut some brush on my property and it cuts really great. Does anyone have one and if so what do you think of it?

I have one just like it. I have not used it much for any serious task. My thoughts: fit and finish are sort of borderline, the blade seems to have pits or air pockets underneath the black coating, it is a very intimidating looking blade, the handle is decent and at least moderately comfortable, it seems too heavy to carry for long. Overall: it seems like a decent knife for the money

I have one also and it is kept between the matress and boxspring with handle sticking out. I split a little kindling with it but, the CS khurhi(sp) is better suited to that task. I is a good deal for the money and I also wish the swedge was sharpened-then it would perfect in my opinion.

The only thing I don't like is the sheath. I wish I could find a replacement. The fit and finish are good. There are no voids under the finish and it takes a good edge.

I would also like to see a sharpened swedge on this one.

then you would have a false edge and in some places it would be considered a double edged knife and possible problem, police states like MASS would take it away from you, at the least and maybe jail you. Think before you change from swedge to false edge. all the best, A. G.

Thanks for the advice A.G. and am impressed that you would respond to a newbie like me. I have no plans to sharpen the swedge at present (not enough time or inclination). I really think this bowie (as is) is probably an illegal carry in my state unless one has a set purpose in carrying it (hunting, camping, etc.). I don't even live in a "police state" either.

I still want to come and see your shop someday. Have a good one!

Thanks, I hope you come by, the shop does not amount to much, my home shop was wiped out by someone while we were remodeling the shop, they got my Dozier Grinder, Dozier Buffer, Power Washer and all of my hand tools. However the knife store is open 6 days aweek and is a sight to see.

all the best,

A. G.

I have one and for the money it can't be beat as a hard user. I have chopped trees, busted cement blocks and bricks, split logs, you name it. Easy to sharpen (I reprofiled the edge to make it a tad more acute [per Cliff Stamp's recomendations] and I also DID sharpen the swedge. The handle is fine but I wrapped mine with tennis racquet grip tape to make it a tad more comfortable. The only drawback is that the guard has come loose from all the abuse and rattles slightly now. Other than that it's still going strong.

All Ontario Spec Plus knives are great "bang for the buck" users and this one is a heavy duty workhorse.

Peace-
Cam
