I've just bought some Ontario knives and since these are my first from Ontario, I was wondering if any of you have had much experience with them?

I just got this one in the mail today...

It's an Ontario OK8325 SP6 Spec Plus Fighting Knife that I bought for $34 on ebay. Here's the full description...

Ontario USA Tactical Military Spec Plus Fighting Bowie Carbon Steel Knife. Measures 13" overall. 8" 1095 carbon steel features bowie blade. Top of blade features 3 1/2" sharpened section. Tang stamped with Ontario USA. Black grooved Kraton handle with lanyard. Black cordura and leather belt sheath. New in bulk packed. Made in USA.

It's so sharp that I can shave with it.

And, I'll have this knife by the end of the week...

It's a good, solid knife.

Just to let you know
, Ontario Knives is sort of out of favor at the moment with many
BladeForums members because Ontario has recently become involved in a business dispute with another company, R.A.T. Cutlery.

Thanks for the info rifon! I'll keep that in mind. I'm just a newby here so I need some ed.

I have a Spec Plus 8 machete. I've beat this thing repeatedly....chopping....digging.....battoning. The coating was wearing off so I just stripped it. A solid piece of equipment.

they are great knives its true alot of people dislike Ontario and are boycotting them but i see no reason to not buy some really good made knives

I also bought three 12" and one 18" machetes (with the loop handles). I'll probably give them as gifts.

I have an Ontario Beaver-Tail Machete and that thing is a tank. I have cut down 2 inch thick trees with one slash. I have used it to chop Coconuts in half.
I keep it in my truck as a just-in-case. If we are ever over-run by a hoard of Flesh-eating Zombies... I know what I'm using!

Very interested in that Bowie.
BTW... Why are people boycotting Ontario Knives?

People are boycotting ontario because of their shady buisness practices.
Ontario made a RAT line that Mr. Randall and Perrin disigned, well they recently split of and started their own company RAT cutlery.
Ontario dicided to sue RAT for trade marks that RAT owns and used before the ontario contract.
RAT issued a cease and desist against ontario but they continue to make RAT knives, most have obtuse edges and bad grinds or heattreats.

Personally, I'll let the courts decide who is practicing shady business. All I know is that Ontario makes some really good knives for the money. So, I'll do business with them until they screw me over. But, for now, I'm a happy customer.

My ontario fighter is THE knife I would choose if I had to fight with one.
You should only think about thinning or convexing the edge - it's VERY thick from the factory, in my piece it was about 1,7 mm thick.

Yes, I own the SP2.
It was one of my first knives so I thought iit was great then, its still my garage knife though.
I'm just saying, I wouldnt bet my life on it; I have heard of lots of heat treat problems with the spec-plus line.

Teagu,

Great choice of knives. I had one of the Navy dive knives for years and it took all kinds of abuse and my dad still uses it. Soon I am going to pick up the 12" machete with the saw back and one of their big bowies.

I've read a lot of posts of people saying they have "heard" about heat treat problems. I've not read a lot of 1st hand reviews indicating this problem is as wide-spread as you imply. I have seen far more favorable posts on this site about the Spec Plus line than negative.

Did I make a negative post?
I said I would not bet my life on them(thats my opinion).
I have heard about problems with the heat treat from massive edge faluires and chipping, I didnt say all of them have this problem.

I don't think you made a negative post.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

I will admit they are good for the price.

I will also admit that Ontario has gotten alot of flak recently, some of it warented and some of it not.

Heh. We have a Good, Bad and Ugly forum already for folks who've had business transactions. Maybe we deserve a new one for all the companies we have no direct knowledge about or dealings with, but want to boycott anyway. :p

Regarding Ontario's inconsistencies, everyone's favorite, Cliff Stamp, seemed to note such problems with several Ontario knives. Funny, the same kind of folks wetting their pants over Ontario's evilness did the same when Stamp originally skewered their sacred cows. Just can't win sometimes when folks have a dog in the race.

I have several knives in the spec plus line and they are good solid knives and a good value. I have not experienced any heat treat problems with any that i own either but i no longer use them often since i started buying rangers for hard use.
