I have a camping trip coming up, and I am looking into getting a decent chopper, but I cant spend a whole lot right now. Long term, I would like one of GL Drews custom choppers, but in the meantime I am looking for bang for buck. I found the Ontario Kukri which can be had for around $60, and it comes in 1095 carbon steel which I like. I will want it to stand up to wood processing for fires, batoning, and general work outside. I have no experience with Ontario Knives, but I know they are USA made and have quite a following.

Any users with experience? Other things to look at?

I bought an Ontario Spec Plus khuk for my son and I really like it. The ergos of the blade, the size, and weight are quite good . The handle is a tad bit blocky, but usable. The steel seems very tough and it came with a great edge. For the price I think it's awesome deal. They seems popular around here as well. My experience with Condor is limited, but I've not been overly impressed. They're Ok, but the steel seems a bit too soft. I'd go with the Ontario and never look back. Good luck.

I looked at the some of the condor offerings. It seems like they are all made in el salvador. For the kukris in particular, I noticed that the blade thickness was much higher on the ontario. I think I am going to give it a shot!
