Hey all, its been a long time since posting and wanted to share some photos of a project I did recently. So I had an 18" Ontario machete that I loved, but never used since it is too thick compared to the 18" Tramontina that suits more of the yard cleanup that I need in the Pacific Northwest.

I have always wanted a 12" or so chopper and hiking blade, and didn't feel like buying a 12" ontario machete, so I cut down my 18" machete to 12.75", to be the perfect length (plus sheath) to fit into my pack for a hiking knife. While I was at it, I decided to add a clip point. Everything went so smooth and was really fun, I want to start doing this more often! I had already spend lots of time making a large scandi grind section on my 18" machete, so I thought this would work out well and save me time.

The original sheath I made for the 18", I was able to cut off a small 4" portion of it to get it to be a perfect length to stuff the handle in, it is a very tight fit, she isn't going anywhere. Also, I have a lanyard attached to a carabiner to sheath the blade when I am not packing it, and letting it remain sheathed if it gets dropped or held upside down and let the leather remain tight for when I actually use it. All in all, I love this blade, I have already used it a lot more around the yard to trim branches in tight areas, the convex edge is scary sharp, I have no arm hair left :). Can't wait to take it up into the mountains for a day hike. Sorry for the long post!

Excellent! I have always had a soft spot for the 18 inch Ontario. Now you have a super mod which reminds me of the Busse 1311, a small machete that has become one of my favorite for packing on the trail. Your 13 inch (give or take) rendition may be just about perfect especially when protracted trips in the bush are at hand. Love the tip treatment. I enjoy a knife that isn't too heavy, and yours will no doubt do the trick. It is all about finding the sweet spot.

Back in the day, I used the 18 inch Ontario as my primary survival tool. Even Jerry Hossum had mentioned it might be the perfect implement when the chips are down. Your Ontario 'lite' may just qualify as such a venerable and sensible choice.

Good job!

Thanks guys! Ill be tackling the handle next, which ive never done before so that should be interesting.. i dont have a scale so i cant weigh it, i would be interested how much the blade weighs.
