Hey guys.
I´m thinking of getting a marine raider bowie and is wondering about the tang.
Is it a thick tang or kind of a thin rattail tang.
I have not been able to find any info on that nor any pictures.

Thanks a lot

Jonas

I've never seen one either, but it's obviously a stick tang (i.e., one that is totally hidden inside the handle). I'd assume that it goes all the way to the end of the handle and the brass lanyard tube holds the handle in place. I'd further assume that the tang is probably at least somewhat similar to that of Cold Steel's Trail Master/Recon Scout. Whether the tang on the Ontario widens out near the shoulders where it goes through the guard or whether the shoulders are radiused or 90* I cannot say. I do recall reading about a couple guys here who have them and beat the snot outta them without issue, and I don't recall ever hearing of a broken tang on one. I honestly wouldn't worry about it.

edit: Here's a Trail Master tang for reference. I know that Ontario doesn't use those little welded tabs to hold the guard in place so ignore those, but the rest of the tang on the Raider is likely similar to this one.

edit 2: Here's a stick tang on a Scrap Yard knife. You can see the radiusing on the shoulders on this one.

Not sure which image is more representative of what the Raider's tang looks like, but these pics will at least give you some idea of what to expect.

Thanks a lot.
I was thinking about the same thing regarding the 90* angles at the guard. I really don´t like 90* angleson knives, but maybe i just have to buy one and check for myself :-)
I am considering the SP53 also. Almost kukri like in shape.

I saw a thread where someone (sorry i don´t remember your name), had put a wooden handle on his sp10 marine raider.
Now i can´t find the thread.
I´m guessing that guy knows exactly what the tang looks like. Maybe with pictures :-)

Wow thats great, thanks. It was not the thread i have seen before though.
But this was sure helpful.

I bought a marine raider and took the handle of to see the tang.
I can´t figure out to post pictures, so for those who are interested, heres a link to a danish forum.
I am pleased with the tang. No 90 degree angles in the transition from handle to blade. only a little notch where the guard is.

Even though the tang is really strong, it would be nice with a full tang marine raider. Maybe with micarta scales

What holds the guard in place?... Is that a dab of weld I see on the backside of that guard in the picture? Thanks in advance :)

Probably ended up with a too wide to hold handle and a heavy knife (badly balanced). A knife this size is meant for some chopping and if the balance point is too far back near the handle, chopping potential is reduced.
