A search turned up a fair number of negative comments. I am looking at several, a Marine or Navy Bowie type. Is their quality that bad?

I have a marine combat that's been through hell. It's about 6 years old I bet. It's been bent and bent back. Thrown it quite a bit too. The handle is still in good shape. The sheath is still goin strong also. It doesn't seem to take an edge very well anymore, but it stll makes a great beater.

I have an Ontario Pilot Survival Knife dated 6/91 that looks as though it had been to hell and back before I got it.

Smash, could you maybe be more specific regarding which model or models you are asking about here?

The Navy Dive Model and the Marine Fighter. I know I am getting a Rat -3 anyway, planning on using it as a biking knife. The other two I am looking for as basic utility/camping knives. I live near the coast, and camp frequently on some harbor islands so the stainless might be an option, but I have no issues caring for a Carbon blade in such conditions. I was basically all set to buy till I did a search here. I want to keep it specific to Ontario. If the concensus is not to buy, I have several other companies in mind anyway.

The Ontario fixed blades that I have used held a good edge and were extremely tough. The grinds are generally a little off, but I think that is to be expected for the price.

They're meant to be a bit rough- they're issue knives and thus are made cheap and strong. I've sharpened many of them for friends, though, and they all have been well made.

My Ontario Pilot's knife served me well in the Gulf War.
It gets the job done and it's not too expensive and is easily replaced.

There are better knives out there but they tend to cost more.

I dyed the handle black.
